About the product

Three neighbouring places tell different chapters of Aachen's history. The cathedral, Town Hall and Elisenbrunnen are all within this round crop, joined by the short streets of the old centre. Oiled walnut turns those connections into a compact wooden map. Behind the cut upper layer, a black back plate provides contrast and makes the two-layer construction part of the design.

Aachen's historic centre: palace, town and thermal springs

A short distance separates Aachen Cathedral, the Town Hall and the Elisenbrunnen. Each represents a different part of the city's history, from Charlemagne's palace to civic government and thermal bathing. Their close relationship gives the surrounding streets and squares an unusually concentrated range of architectural forms and historical meanings.

A concentrated meeting of histories

Three neighbouring places offer a particularly revealing introduction to central Aachen. The cathedral belongs to the history of the Carolingian palace and the city's religious life. The Town Hall represents civic government and public authority. The Elisenbrunnen gives architectural expression to the importance of thermal water. Their purposes differ, but the buildings occupy one closely connected system of streets and squares.

Their short separation also brings different periods together. This is not an ensemble created at a single moment. Older structures were adapted, extended and joined by later buildings, leaving a centre with several historical layers. The arrangement is useful precisely because those layers remain distinguishable. A small area can contain a long history without looking uniform.

Reading the cathedral beside the Town Hall

The former palace chapel of Charlemagne forms the cathedral's core. Its octagonal structure differs from the elongated plans associated with many churches. Later additions produced the larger building that stands today. The cathedral consequently combines a concentrated early centre with evidence of continued development, giving the surrounding city a monument whose form records more than one architectural period.

The Town Hall stands north of the cathedral. Its Gothic structure occupies the area of the earlier palace and continues the site's political significance in a different institutional form. The proximity of these two buildings is therefore historically meaningful. Their relationship connects imperial and religious authority with the later expression of civic identity in the same central part of Aachen.

Open spaces and tighter passages mediate between them. These intermediate areas allow each building to retain a distinct setting while keeping both within a common urban centre. Attention to the spaces between monuments reveals something that individual architectural descriptions can miss: the historic heart depends on relationships between buildings as well as on their separate importance.

A public expression of thermal water

Southeast of the cathedral, the Elisenbrunnen introduces a different architectural language. Its neoclassical form belongs to Aachen's bathing tradition and gives the city's springs a public presence. The open arrangement contrasts with the substantial Town Hall and the cathedral's accumulated building volumes. This third point adds another kind of space to the compact centre.

The streets linking these places bring the histories of palace, town and springs into a single geographical setting. Aachen's centre gains its character from that concentration. Each landmark remains recognisably different in age, form and purpose, while the short connections between them make their shared place in the city's development easy to understand.
