About the product

Ankara's citadel rises above the city's older quarters. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations sits at its foot, with Hacı Bayram Mosque further northwest. Short streets and irregular blocks connect these historic places in a closely woven map. Wood brings warmth to the old urban pattern, where the castle hill, museum and mosque district remain closely related within a small area.

City guide

Ankara’s older city around the citadel

Important historic places gather around Ankara’s citadel at short distances but different levels. Museum, mosque and fortifications reveal several roles within the older city. Their compact relationship offers a perspective on Ankara that reaches well before its development as a modern capital, with the hillside helping organise the surrounding streets.

The citadel and the shape of the ground

Ankara’s citadel occupies an elevated position above neighbouring historic streets. The fortifications are among the city’s defining older complexes and demonstrate the importance of terrain to its development. Routes lead towards the hill, while buildings respond to changes in level and the ground available around them. This creates a plan unlike the regular layouts of later districts. Streets do not follow an even grid. Their arrangement is closely related to the slope, the fortifications and the entrances to an urban area that developed through successive periods of occupation and change.

Commercial buildings with a museum role

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations lies below the citadel to the southwest. It occupies two historic Ottoman commercial buildings, the Mahmut Pasha Bedesten and Kurşunlu Han. Its present cultural purpose is therefore embedded within an earlier architecture of trade. The setting brings several historical layers together. The buildings recall commerce and urban exchange, while the collections reach far back into Anatolia’s past. This relationship makes the museum’s position on the citadel slopes especially revealing. History is present in the organisation of the buildings as well as in the objects displayed inside them.

A religious focus to the northwest

Hacı Bayram Mosque stands northwest of the museum and establishes another important place within the older city. Its surrounding open spaces and the position of the religious building give it a different setting from the more tightly defined citadel area. Mosque and fortress are connected over relatively short distances, but their roles are distinct. Defence, trade and religious life each occupied particular spaces. Their proximity demonstrates how a historic city brought many functions together within limited ground, developing relationships through time rather than following a single comprehensive plan for the entire district.

An earlier layer within the capital

Ankara is often associated with its development as the capital of the Turkish Republic. The citadel district opens a longer historical perspective. Its sequence of older buildings and irregular streets preserves an urban structure established before modern capital planning. Citadel, museum and mosque are nevertheless connected places rather than isolated monuments. Neighbouring buildings and hillside routes continue to bind them together. Considered as a whole, they reveal how different periods and functions remain present within a topographically shaped neighbourhood, giving the older city a distinct identity inside contemporary Ankara.
