City guide

Ankara between the citadel and the republic

Ankara's older citadel district shares the central city with major places associated with the republic. Anıtkabir, Gençlik Park and Kocatepe Mosque establish different directions and scales. Their relationships reveal how fortified heights, planned public grounds and dense neighbourhoods combine within the urban landscape of the Turkish capital.

The citadel preserves an older geography

The elevated citadel forms Ankara's northern historical focus, overlooking a much later urban landscape. Its position belongs to a history extending far before the modern republic. Older houses and streets survive within and around the fortified area. The citadel consequently represents more than an individual monument. It brings together elevation, defence and the development of an established settlement.

Terrain distinguishes this district from the more expansive public sites of the later city. Tighter streets respond to slope and surrounding buildings. The older area around the castle can therefore be recognised as a particular part of Ankara, with a spatial order arising from conditions different from those of the republic's substantial planned complexes.

A monumental place of republican memory

Anıtkabir stands west of the central districts as the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Its significance is closely connected with remembrance of the republic's founder. The monumental, symmetrical arrangement gives architectural form to that role. Large open spaces and clearly organised structures establish a setting markedly different from the close streets around the citadel.

Comparing these places reveals a fundamental relationship within Ankara. The castle refers to a long history of settlement and authority, while Anıtkabir expresses a central subject of republican commemoration. Both occupy prominent positions, but their forms and historical roles differ. Intervening neighbourhoods connect them as parts of the same city rather than separate monumental landscapes.

Public landscape and a southern mosque

Gençlik Park lies southwest of the castle and northeast of Anıtkabir. Its open planted grounds introduce a public landscape into the centre. Water and paths provide an arrangement different from the surrounding street blocks. The park consequently creates a spatial counterpart within the dense urban area while remaining closely connected with its neighbouring districts.

Kocatepe Mosque stands farther south. Built during the twentieth century, it draws on forms associated with Ottoman mosque architecture. Its dome and minarets establish a substantial reference in this part of Ankara. The complex demonstrates how later urban development can adopt an older architectural language while introducing a new location and scale into the city.

The connections between castle, park, mausoleum and mosque belong to the everyday structure of a large capital. Each place explains a different aspect of Ankara, and their geographical relationships make those distinctions more informative. Older neighbourhoods coexist with monumental architecture and public landscape, giving the central city several recognisable settings within one continuing urban fabric.
