About the product

Johannisburg Palace anchors Aschaffenburg's architecture, while the wider city extends through parks and residential districts. Schönbusch to the west, Schöntal near the centre and Schweinheim to the southeast establish its broader geography. This wooden map connects the palace city with landscaped ground and neighbourhood streets. Built and open areas contribute equally to the resulting urban portrait.

City guide

Aschaffenburg: Palace city and landscaped parks

Aschaffenburg's long connection with the archbishops of Mainz shaped its monumental palace. Its parks express other ideas about the design of space. Johannisburg, Schönbusch, Schöntal and Schweinheim locate a wider city in which courtly history, public green ground and established residential neighbourhoods contribute distinct but closely related elements.

A residence beside the river

Johannisburg Palace is a defining building in Aschaffenburg. Its large, regular Renaissance complex records the city's role as a residence of the archbishops of Mainz. The concentrated building group operates at a different scale from the smaller streets and properties nearby. It provides a strong reference point within the surrounding town.

The riverside position reinforces that role. Palace, bank and higher urban ground stand in close relationship, making the residence prominent from both the city and the water. Yet Aschaffenburg's historical identity cannot be reduced to this single monument. The wider town includes landscaped spaces and residential areas formed under different circumstances.

Parks in contrasting urban positions

Schönbusch lies west of the denser city. Its landscape park extends the courtly story into the design of substantial open ground. Unlike the regular enclosure of a palace block, a landscaped park works through paths, planted areas and changing spatial relationships. Its extent makes it a distinct part of the city's geography, rather than simply a garden adjoining the main residence.

Green space near the centre

Schöntal occupies a more central position. Here, streets and green space meet over a much shorter distance. The two parks therefore contribute differently to Aschaffenburg. Schönbusch opens the urban picture westwards, while Schöntal introduces a break within the more closely built centre. Their comparison reveals how several kinds of open space can shape one city.

Residential Aschaffenburg

Schweinheim extends the composition towards the southeast. Established housing and connecting streets become more prominent in this part of the urban area. Including the district widens the account beyond representative architecture and celebrated gardens. These everyday neighbourhoods are essential to understanding the scale of the present city.

Across the ground between Johannisburg, Schönbusch, Schöntal and Schweinheim, compact buildings alternate with open landscape and smaller residential streets. The differences reflect changing purposes rather than an accidental assortment of places. Residence, landscaped setting and housing each required a different organisation of land.

Routes between those areas make Aschaffenburg coherent as a larger town. The palace remains its strongest historical architectural reference, but parks and neighbourhoods explain the breadth of its geography. Together they show how courtly influence became part of a city whose present form extends well beyond the monumental centre.
