About the product

Augsburg's urban history reaches from the Rathaus and Fuggerei to the water infrastructure at Hochablass. The main station adds a western reference within this overview. Connecting streets place the old centre in a wider landscape of transport and water supply. Framed in oiled walnut, the landscape map uses a cut upper layer over a black back plate to give the routes depth.

City guide

Augsburg's city history through water and civic space

Augsburg connects a representative historic centre with a wider landscape of water engineering. The Rathaus and Fuggerei anchor the older city, while Hochablass establishes a southeastern reference on the Lech. The railway station adds a western counterpart, bringing cultural places and essential infrastructure into one broad urban portrait.

Water as a shared urban responsibility

Augsburg's water management system is recognised as UNESCO World Heritage. It includes an interconnected legacy of canals, waterworks and technical installations from different periods, rather than a collection of ornamental fountains alone. Its importance lies in the sustained development of several related functions. Drinking water, industrial use and power generation all influenced the organisation of the city.

Hochablass, on the Lech southeast of the centre, provides a particularly clear reference for this relationship. Here the connection between river and urban water system becomes tangible. Its position beyond the tight historic core shows that supply depended on a wider geography. Augsburg needed installations and waterways whose operation extended well outside the streets of the central town.

Civic representation and a social foundation

The Rathaus stands within the historic centre and expresses the city's civic identity. Its substantial building belongs to an area of public squares and closely connected streets. Representative architecture differs in scale and purpose from the engineering structures beside the river, but both form part of a history involving prosperity, organisation and collective urban responsibilities.

The Fuggerei lies to the east. Founded by Jakob Fugger as a social housing settlement, it continues to serve a residential purpose. Its ordered houses and internal routes create a distinct setting within the city. Unlike the Rathaus, its principal unit is not one large representative building, but a planned sequence of homes and the connections between them.

These places reveal different dimensions of Augsburg's history. Municipal authority and a private charitable foundation addressed separate needs. Their surviving buildings occupy nearby ground without sharing the same function or architectural form. The short distance between them makes the variety of the historic centre particularly easy to understand.

Infrastructure beyond the old core

The main railway station extends the portrait westwards. Tracks and transport areas introduce a later infrastructure into the city. Like the water system, the railway follows technical requirements, but it creates different lines, spaces and connections. Its position demonstrates how Augsburg accommodated new spatial arrangements through successive periods of development.

Between station, Rathaus, Fuggerei and Hochablass, the city can be read at several levels. Cultural places remain connected with a larger landscape of supply and movement. Augsburg's particular character consequently comes from more than its historic facades. It also depends on the relationship between the built centre and the technical systems that supported urban growth and everyday life over a long period.
