Bernkastel-Kues.Both Moselle banks and the castle hill
Round wooden city map made from oiled maple.
About the product
Bernkastel-Kues occupies both Moselle banks, joining compact old streets with more open riverside areas. The Spitzhäuschen, Cusanus Foundation and Nicholas of Cusa’s birthplace introduce separate historical references, while Landshut Castle rises above the valley. In wood, these relationships become a composed town portrait. River, hillside and established routes show how the two urban banks belong together without losing their distinct forms.

Bernkastel-Kues across the Moselle and beneath the castle
The Moselle gives Bernkastel-Kues a clear spatial structure. Bernkastel’s timber-framed centre lies below the castle hill, while Kues preserves separate streets and cultural places across the water. The Cusanus Foundation and birthplace recall Nicholas of Cusa. Together with Landshut Castle, they reveal a town shaped by riverbanks, slopes and distinct historical settings.
Small-scale streets in Bernkastel
Bernkastel’s old town contains a dense arrangement of streets and historical buildings. Timber-framed houses contribute strongly to the surroundings of the market square. The Spitzhäuschen represents the small scale of individual buildings within this close urban fabric. That density also relates to the position between the Moselle and rising ground. Town and landscape stand directly alongside one another. The centre is consequently more than a set of older houses: it is a coherent settlement whose limits and form respond to the river on one side and the hillside on the other.
Landshut above the valley
Landshut Castle occupies an elevated site above Bernkastel, introducing a second level to the town’s geography. Its location has a long history of fortification, including evidence connected with Roman occupation. The later castle underwent repeated changes and survived as a ruin after a fire. Building history and position are equally important to understanding the place. The height explains the relationship between defence, observation and the valley below. Within the town portrait, the castle belongs to the nearby landscape that gives the older settlement its distinctive setting.
A separate urban bank at Kues
Kues lies across the Moselle. Its streets, riverside spaces and historical places complement Bernkastel’s compact centre with a different urban arrangement. The river separates the two sides geographically while also giving them a shared valley context. This relationship is important to the overall town. Kues is not simply a continuation of the same closely grouped old streets. Its waterfront and wider built areas create their own scale. Viewing both banks together makes their connection clear while preserving the differences between their patterns of settlement.
Nicholas of Cusa in several places
The Cusanus Foundation and birthplace connect Kues with Nicholas of Cusa. Alongside its social tradition, the foundation preserves a historical library containing manuscripts. The birthplace farther south provides a different biographical reference. Both belong to the same side of the town but occupy separate positions and serve different purposes. They show that the scholar’s cultural legacy is not concentrated in a single building. These places add another form of historical significance opposite the castle hill, placing intellectual and social heritage within the everyday streets of Kues.
The shape of a valley town
Old streets, foundation, birthplace and castle create several relationships across the town. The Moselle supplies their shared geographical line, while the slopes give the settlement height and a visible landscape boundary. Riverside development differs from the streets farther inland. These transitions explain Bernkastel-Kues as a whole place rather than two isolated centres. Its distinctive form combines dense historical building, open river space and an elevated castle site. The connection of both banks preserves their separate histories within the same established town on the Middle Moselle.
