About the product

Bocholt's historic town hall and Textilwerk buildings connect civic history with industrial work. The Aasee and the northern neighbourhood of Stenern broaden that relationship. This wooden city map brings different densities and open spaces together. It presents a textile town where the old centre, factory heritage and green everyday landscapes occupy closely connected parts of the urban area.

Bocholt: Textile heritage and green neighbourhoods

Textiles shaped Bocholt for generations, but the town also has an older civic history. Its historic town hall records that earlier tradition, while factory sites introduced larger plots and new working environments. Residential districts and open spaces connect these layers, extending the urban picture towards the Aasee and Stenern.

Civic history before the factories

Bocholt's historic town hall was built between 1618 and 1624. The Renaissance building represents a civic tradition considerably older than the town's large textile factories. Its importance is institutional as well as architectural. It provided a focus for local government and expressed that role in built form. The surrounding streets belong to a smaller-grained pattern than the industrial sites that developed later.

This earlier centre is an essential reference point. Understanding Bocholt only through textile production would overlook the town into which industry expanded. Town hall and factory were not components of one simultaneous plan. New activities enlarged an existing settlement while its older civic focus remained important.

The scale of textile work

Textilwerk preserves the history of spinning and weaving. These were separate stages of production within a connected industry. Factory buildings and machinery required extensive plots and spaces unlike those of the older town. Industrial scale can therefore be understood through the organisation of land as well as through the equipment once used inside the buildings.

Museum use gives former production spaces a public purpose. It also keeps significant building fabric within the present city. Bocholt's industrial history is consequently encountered through adapted places rather than only through accounts of vanished work. Reuse forms part of the city's continuing development.

Water and residential neighbourhoods

The Aasee lies southeast of the historic centre. Its open water provides a marked contrast with narrow streets and large building groups. Paths and green areas connect it to neighbouring districts, making it part of the urban structure rather than a detached landscape beyond the town. It changes the rhythm of built and open ground.

Stenern extends the picture northwards into residential Bocholt. Here, everyday housing geography becomes more prominent than the familiar central landmarks. Including the district establishes a broader view of the city and the connections that hold it together.

Town hall, Textilwerk, Aasee and Stenern represent different functions and different scales. Together they explain the development of a civic town transformed by textile production and enlarged by housing and public open space. Bocholt's character lies in the continued relationship between those layers, each still contributing a distinct part to the present urban landscape.
