About the product

The Jahrhunderthalle and Westpark share ground shaped by Bochum's industrial past. This square crop follows their close relationship and the streets that connect the former works with neighbouring districts. Cut from oiled oak, the map uses the single-layer Classic construction. With no back plate, the spaces between the cut routes remain open, giving the former industrial setting a restrained wooden form.

Westpark: an industrial landscape opened to the city

Around Bochum's Jahrhunderthalle, former works became a public park that retains the structure of its industrial past. Terraces, surviving buildings and connecting paths give Westpark a distinctive form. The district makes urban change tangible through one coherent site, where inherited ground supports a different public and cultural life.

Westpark occupies ground transformed by approximately a century and a half of iron and steel production. Industrial activity left changes in level, substantial structures and a particular arrangement of spaces. These conditions became the starting point for a public landscape. The former works of the Bochumer Verein can still be understood through the organisation of the site, even though its purpose has changed.

Opening inherited ground

The first section of Westpark opened in 1999, with the surrounding landscape developing further over subsequent years. Its creation was therefore a process rather than a single replacement of one setting by another. Former industrial ground gradually became an interconnected place for recreation and culture, using the traces of earlier activity as part of its design.

Ramps, walkways and bridges link different levels. They do more than provide routes across an otherwise flat park. Their arrangement responds to the inherited terrain and allows people to move through a landscape formed by production. The connections make those changes in level accessible and understandable, giving the site's industrial history a continuing role in its everyday spatial organisation.

Areas of woodland, grass and water stand alongside surviving built elements. This combination is essential to Westpark's character. New open spaces did not entirely remove the evidence of previous use. Instead, industrial remains acquired a different setting. The neighbouring residential districts are part of the same transformation, as former working land became a public place within the surrounding city.

The hall retains its presence

The Jahrhunderthalle occupies the centre of this landscape. Originally constructed as an exhibition hall, it was subsequently used as an industrial gas power station before becoming a cultural and events venue. These changing functions connect several stages of Bochum's development within one substantial building. Its architecture carries a history that cannot be reduced to its present use alone.

The hall remains a dominant reference within the park. A water tower and other industrial relics add further elements without forming the close rows of an ordinary street. Their spacing preserves the larger scale of a works complex. Paths now pass between them and connect the buildings with public open areas, establishing new relationships within an inherited framework.

This is what makes Westpark a specific rather than a generic example of urban change. Its industrial past is not confined to an exhibition or a written account. It continues to influence levels, distances and building forms across the ground itself. Those physical relationships give the Jahrhunderthalle's cultural role a distinctive setting within Bochum.
