About the product

The Oker's channels curve around Braunschweig's historic centre, enclosing streets, squares and green riverbanks. Burgplatz, Altstadtmarkt and the State Theatre bring courtly, civic and cultural history into close proximity. Wood lends warmth to the map's intricate urban pattern. The flowing river lines hold together the smaller spaces and winding connections that give the old centre its character.

Inside Braunschweig’s Oker ring

Several historic focal points lie close together within the Oker’s encircling branches. Burgplatz, Altstadtmarkt and the State Theatre each represent a different part of urban life and have their own spatial setting. The river frames their relationship, while bridges and green areas create transitions between the compact centre and neighbouring districts.

An enclosing river with open connections

The Oker branches give the inner city a clearly traceable boundary. They do not isolate it from the surrounding neighbourhoods. Bridges continue the street connections, making the edge permeable at many points. This produces a distinctive relationship between a well-defined centre and numerous outward links. The curving river lines contrast with the more closely woven streets inside them. Together, these systems shape an urban area whose outline depends on water, buildings and the routes crossing between them. The river is therefore both a boundary and part of the city’s wider network.

Separate historic spaces within one centre

Burgplatz provides a central historic focus through its closely related ensemble. Altstadtmarkt lies farther southwest, establishing another significant space within the same compact area. Their separation shows that Braunschweig’s centre developed around several important places. Each square has a different role in the urban plan and belongs to its own surrounding street pattern. A single monumental avenue does not connect them. Instead, the route passes through an inherited network of streets, changes in direction and smaller spaces. This variety preserves different historical layers within an area where the distances between major places remain relatively short.

The theatre beside a greener edge

The State Theatre stands east of Burgplatz near the Oker. Its position brings a substantial cultural building into contact with more open ground at the inner city’s edge. Green spaces along the river ring belong to the transformation of former fortification areas. Ground once shaped by military needs acquired different public purposes as the city developed. The close relationship between theatre, river and planted space makes that change tangible. Buildings become less tightly packed here, while streets maintain the connection with the central districts. The transition is an important urban space in its own right.

A centre with several distinct parts

The three principal places offer different ways of understanding the inner city. Burgplatz concentrates a historic ensemble, Altstadtmarkt forms another independent square, and the State Theatre introduces the greener eastern edge. Between them, narrower and broader streets alternate with smaller open areas. This variety across a short distance gives the centre much of its character. The Oker ring brings the separate parts into a shared setting without removing their differences. Braunschweig’s inner city can consequently be read both as a coherent whole and as a sequence of distinct historical spaces connected through the street network.
