City guide

Braunschweig’s centre and wider green setting

The Oker is closely bound to Braunschweig’s historic centre, but the wider city extends well beyond it. Abbey grounds, a palace, the railway station and the northwestern river landscape establish other focal points. Together, they reveal how historic sites and substantial open areas relate to the surrounding built neighbourhoods.

A historic point of reference

Burgplatz is one of Braunschweig’s defining historic ensembles. Its importance reaches beyond individual buildings, bringing a significant part of the city’s history together in a compact urban space. Within the wider city, however, it is one reference point among several. Streets from the centre lead into larger routes serving different neighbourhoods. This relationship allows the historic core to remain legible without standing for the entire city. Burgplatz provides a central focus, while the more distant places reveal the extent and diversity of Braunschweig’s broader urban setting.

A river woven through the city

The Oker is fundamental to Braunschweig’s shape. Its branches surround the inner city and help distinguish the central area from later extensions. Bridges provide essential connections across the water. Beyond the historic core, the river belongs to larger areas of landscape, including the surroundings of Ölper Mill in the northwest. Built neighbourhoods alternate with more open ground, creating a changing relationship between settlement and water. The river and the road network follow different patterns, but together they provide continuity across the city and help explain the distribution of its denser and greener spaces.

Abbey grounds and a southern palace

Riddagshausen Abbey establishes a distinct historic focus to the east. Its origins lie in a Cistercian foundation, closely associated with the surrounding landscape. Richmond Palace plays a different role in the south, bringing a residence into a designed garden setting. Both stand outside the most concentrated central area. Their positions demonstrate that Braunschweig’s significant historic places are distributed across the wider city. They also introduce another scale of urban space, in which open ground and greater distances between buildings are essential to the character and setting of each historic complex.

Routes between the principal places

The main railway station lies southeast of the historic centre. Its location and railway approaches introduce another layer of urban development alongside the older structures. Residential streets and larger open spaces connect the station with Burgplatz, Riddagshausen and Richmond. These intervening districts turn separated landmarks into parts of a continuous city. Braunschweig consequently combines a recognisable historic focus with an extensive network of other significant places. Its river landscape, transport routes and cultural grounds accompany the growth of neighbourhoods in different ways, producing a varied relationship between built form and open space throughout the urban area.
