Round wooden city map made from oiled walnut – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Dinkelsbühl's town wall encloses a close network of lanes and squares around St George's Minster. Segringer Gate and the town mill mark the historic boundary, with the Wörnitz floodplain and newer neighbourhoods opening out beyond it. Wood brings a natural warmth to this map, which connects the medieval centre with the river landscape and the town that grew around it.

Dinkelsbühl’s walls and river landscape
The boundary of Dinkelsbühl’s old town is unusually easy to follow. Outside its walls, river meadows, transport routes and later neighbourhoods form a more open setting. Reading these spaces together reveals how the historic centre remains closely connected to the valley around it, with churches, gateways and working buildings contributing different layers.
A town with a clear outline
Dinkelsbühl retains much of the fortification surrounding its old town. The gates concentrate routes into and out of the centre, where small lanes meet broader streets and squares. This distinction between the enclosed settlement and its surroundings remains a defining feature of the town plan. The wall does not form a simple geometric shape. Its outline contains a settlement that developed over time, responding to the valley and established routes. Roads continue beyond the gateways, but the tight relationship between streets and enclosed urban space becomes less pronounced outside the defences.
Minster and gateway
St George’s Minster gives the centre a building of exceptional scale. Constructed between 1448 and 1499, the late Gothic hall church stands among much smaller urban plots. Segringer Gate marks the western side of the fortified town. The connection between this gateway and the interior helps explain how entrances structure movement and orientation. Church and gate had different purposes: one gathered religious life, while the other controlled access to the settlement. Together they help articulate the historic town, placing a substantial central monument within an equally legible outer boundary.
The river’s practical role
The town mill occupies a position near the southeastern edge of the old town. Its relationship with water adds the history of everyday production and supply to the more conspicuous story of churches and fortifications. Farther north, the Wörnitz riverside swimming area links the same watercourse with open space beyond the walls. The floodplain introduces a different scale from the close street network. This immediate transition is characteristic of Dinkelsbühl: dense settlement gives way to a river landscape that continues past the old centre and connects several parts of the town.
Later layers outside the walls
The railway station stands east of the historic core, introducing another phase of urban development. Buildings and routes beyond the fortifications show that the town’s life and geography extend beyond its medieval outline. To the north, the wider setting reaches the lakeside campsite. These outer areas are varied, with different relationships between buildings, roads and open ground. Seen together, they explain the old town’s continuing importance without reducing Dinkelsbühl to its historic centre alone. The walls establish a strong reference point, while the river valley and newer neighbourhoods give the settlement its broader shape.
