About the product

Dorsten connects an old town with neighbourhoods shaped by mining and later urban growth. Fürst Leopold, Holsterhausen and Feldmark distribute its landmarks across the central settlement. This wooden city map also follows the water corridors that divide and connect the districts. Historic streets, industrial heritage and residential areas contribute together to the town's distinctive spatial arrangement.

Dorsten: Old town and mining neighbourhoods

Water has supported trade, carried industrial transport and created boundaries within Dorsten. The old town stands south of the main water corridors, with mining-related districts to the north and Feldmark farther south. Understanding the crossings and separations between these areas helps explain the town as clearly as its surviving historic buildings do.

Trade before coal

Dorsten received town rights in 1251. Its formerly fortified old town developed through trade and had links with the Hanseatic network. Shipbuilding was another important historical activity. Water consequently formed an economic resource and a transport route, not simply a boundary around the settlement. The compact centre belonged to a different scale from the industrial districts that developed later.

Bombing in 1945 destroyed much of the historic old town. Its present appearance combines inherited spatial relationships with rebuilding. Continuity here does not mean that every structure survives from an early period. The position of the centre and its connections with neighbouring areas remained important despite extensive losses to the building stock.

Engineering changes the relationship with water

Construction of the shipping canal, completed in 1930, required the river to be moved northwards. This altered the old town's relationship with the water. The parallel corridors now crossing Dorsten are therefore partly the result of deliberate engineering rather than natural development alone. They reflect the transport requirements of an industrial economy.

Those corridors still work in two ways. They provide routes and open space, but they also separate districts north and south. Bridges and their approaches become important joints in the city's structure. The practical relationship between neighbourhoods depends on these crossing points, not just on the short distances that may separate them geographically.

A wider industrial and residential town

Fürst Leopold stands northeast of the old town. The former colliery site records the expansion of industrial Dorsten and the larger plots required by mining. Holsterhausen provides another northern focus. Together, these places show how far the city grew beyond the older centre as work and housing changed its geography.

Feldmark extends the picture to the south. Including it gives equal attention to the residential city rather than treating Dorsten only as a historic core or a former mining town. Different street patterns and densities occur between these areas, linked by the central network of routes.

Dorsten's position between an industrial region and a more open landscape is thus reflected within the city itself. Trade, engineered waterways, mining and housing created distinct spaces. Their close relationship explains the present town, especially where bridges bring together districts that water simultaneously keeps apart.
