About the product

Dresden’s changing street directions follow the Elbe through a broad urban landscape. This overview includes the Yenidze, Blue Wonder bridge, Großer Garten, Albertplatz and the main station, bringing both banks into one composition. Large open spaces interrupt the denser neighbourhoods and help explain their arrangement. The classic rectangular map uses a single layer of natural oiled MDF, keeping the construction simple and the emphasis on the cut lines of the city.

City guide

Dresden through its river, gardens and neighbourhoods

The Elbe structures central Dresden, but the city’s identity also extends away from its banks. The Großer Garten, Neustadt and the approaches to the main station complement the familiar river views. Considering these areas together reveals different scales, functions and periods within a connected urban landscape.

A river that changes the view

The Elbe connects several parts of Dresden without imposing a uniform layout. Its bends establish changing relationships between the banks. Bridges concentrate crossings, while open stretches allow longer views towards the opposite side. The river is therefore both a connection and a substantial interruption within the built-up city.

To the west, the Yenidze introduces an unusual architectural presence. The former factory is a reminder that Dresden’s built history includes more than palaces and religious monuments. Its position near transport routes brings industry and infrastructure into the picture. The relationship between practical use and a distinctive exterior gives this part of the city a character of its own.

The deliberate order of a garden

The Großer Garten was established in the seventeenth century and later opened to the public. Its regular paths and axes contrast with the Elbe’s curving course. The central palace and surrounding spaces express a planned order that retains a distinct scale within the city that grew around it.

This green area is more than an absence of buildings. It is an urban place shaped in its own right. Its boundaries affect neighbouring streets, while its size creates a pronounced relationship between enclosed districts and an open interior. Comparing the garden with the riverbanks reveals two different kinds of landscape within Dresden. One follows a designed arrangement; the other responds to the course of flowing water.

Connections north and east

Albertplatz lies north of the inner city. Streets meeting there give the transition into Neustadt a clear spatial role. Unlike the order of the garden, this is an arrangement created through movement and connection. Several directions gather at one public place before continuing into different neighbourhoods.

Further east, the Blue Wonder links the Elbe’s banks. Opened in 1893, the bridge belongs to Dresden’s history of engineering as well as to its familiar skyline. Its position extends attention beyond the central monuments and towards connections between districts with their own identities.

The main station adds another important approach from the south. Taken together, these places form a network of river, garden, transport nodes and residential areas rather than a uniform urban surface. Their edges are particularly revealing. Following them helps explain whether a street responds to water, to a substantial designed landscape or to the point where one neighbourhood begins to meet another.
