Duisburg.Inner Harbour and Old Town
A square framed oak city map of Duisburg's Inner Harbour and adjoining old town.
About the product
Duisburg's Inner Harbour sits beside the smaller streets of the old town. The Küppersmühle museum and Salvatorkirche fall within this square crop, connecting former industrial buildings with an older civic centre. Oiled oak gives their surrounding street network a warm material setting. The framed map has two wooden layers, with a black back plate providing contrast behind the cut surface.

The Inner Harbour between warehouses and the old town
Duisburg's Inner Harbour places industrial buildings beside an older urban centre. The Küppersmühle museum and Salvatorkirche belong to different historical settings, yet stand close together. Between them, the harbour basin and adjoining streets reveal how large working sites became part of a varied public and cultural district.
A district organised around water
The elongated basin gives Duisburg's Inner Harbour a strong direction. Long waterfront edges accommodate buildings whose substantial size reflects the harbour's former commercial role. Immediately to the south, the old town establishes a different pattern. This proximity is fundamental to the area: the harbour developed alongside the historic centre, rather than as a separate place at a distant edge of the city.
The contrast can be read through the spaces occupied by buildings. Warehouses and industrial premises require larger plots than houses along compact central streets. Their meeting creates a change in urban scale. The basin interrupts the built fabric, but it also provides a shared point of reference for buildings and public spaces along its opposing banks.
A museum within an industrial inheritance
The Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst occupies a former mill and storage building. Its cultural purpose uses an architectural structure inherited from the harbour's working history. The relationship remains legible in the size and brick character of the building. A change of function has therefore introduced another chapter without entirely removing the physical evidence of the earlier one.
The museum offers a specific example of how a district can change through adaptation. An industrial workplace becomes a destination for art, while surrounding open spaces connect it with the waterfront. The building should consequently be understood within its setting. Its relationship to the basin and nearby streets is part of the story, alongside the works displayed inside.
West of the museum, the harbour continues as an extended urban space. Following that direction makes clear that the Küppersmühle occupies one part of a larger system. The waterfront cannot be understood solely as the immediate surroundings of a cultural institution. Its long edges and connections into the centre preserve a broader spatial identity.
The church and the city beyond the quay
Southwest of the basin, the Salvatorkirche belongs to the older town. This Gothic church introduces a historical reference distinct from the industrial warehouses. Its surroundings establish a more closely built urban environment, where street junctions and building fronts provide the principal points of orientation. The open harbour landscape is nearby, but the spatial experience changes noticeably.
Their short separation is what makes the relationship especially revealing. Streets connect the church area with the waterfront as parts of the same central district. Duisburg's old town and Inner Harbour thus preserve different architectural languages in close conversation: an established civic and religious centre, substantial commercial buildings, and the subsequent cultural reuse of former working ground.
