Düsseldorf.City overview
A framed wooden city map in portrait format, with oiled oak veneer on MDF and a layered construction.
About the product
Düsseldorf’s river bend places Oberkassel opposite the inner city, connected by bridges across the Rhine. The view extends from the Nordpark near the Aquazoo to the university district in the south, taking in the Rhine Tower along the way. It gives the neighbourhoods on both banks a place within the same map. A frame encloses the portrait composition, with the cut street layer set against a backing panel. Oiled oak veneer on MDF adds a natural wood surface to this layered piece. The framed format gives a defined edge to a city overview that reaches well beyond the old town.

Düsseldorf around the bend of the Rhine
The Rhine is Düsseldorf’s strongest spatial connection, but its course is far from a straight central axis. Curving banks create changing relationships between districts and viewpoints. Looking from the Nordpark towards Oberkassel and the southern city reveals connections that remain less obvious when attention stays within the old town.
A city facing itself
Oberkassel occupies the western bank of the Rhine opposite central Düsseldorf. This relationship explains an important part of the city’s organisation. The two sides belong closely together, yet direct movement between them is concentrated at bridges. Between those crossings, the banks remain substantial urban spaces in their own right.
The river bend also changes what it means to be opposite something. A place that seems distant from one position may appear much closer from another section of the waterfront. Reading the Rhine as a changing line is therefore more useful than imagining it as a simple division between two equal halves. The curve establishes several different relationships between the districts.
From northern parkland to central streets
The Aquazoo in the Nordpark provides a green northern reference. Further south, the street network becomes denser towards the inner city. This sequence reveals the transition from substantial parkland to more tightly built neighbourhoods. It happens through several streets and intermediate areas rather than at one abrupt boundary.
Königsallee introduces a very different relationship with water. A formal canal runs through the boulevard, bringing its two sides into a narrow and carefully framed setting. Trees, paths and building fronts form a coherent street space. Comparing this canal with the Rhine shows how water can organise a city at very different scales, from a major geographical feature to an element within a single boulevard.
Harbour buildings and everyday connections
At the Media Harbour, the architectural pattern changes again. Large individual buildings meet basins and quay edges, while the Rhine Tower gives the area a recognisable vertical reference. The relationship between buildings and water differs from both Königsallee and the residential streets across the river. Variety among the structures becomes an important part of the setting.
The main station east of the central area and the university to the south extend the view beyond familiar waterfront scenes. They represent the transport and institutional life that also shapes Düsseldorf. Residential streets and larger facilities connect these places to the same urban fabric.
Following those relationships reveals several scales at once: the broad river bend, the districts on either side, and the smaller streets and waterways within them. Düsseldorf’s coherence comes from their interaction. No single riverbank or landmark can fully explain the city without the other places to which it is connected.
