About the product

The Gera links Erfurt’s historic centre with northern parks and residential neighbourhoods. To the south, the wooded Steiger ridge forms a different edge, while egapark adds a deliberately designed garden landscape in the west. This is a city whose character extends well beyond its celebrated old streets. Around the Merchants’ Bridge, closely packed houses create an intimate scale; at Johannesplatz, larger residential buildings stand within more open surroundings. River corridors, gardens and contrasting forms of housing belong to the same urban landscape. The distinctive relationship lies in their proximity: several generations of city building meet between a low river valley and a wooded southern rise.

City guide

Erfurt’s urban landscape along the Gera

The green spaces around Erfurt are as varied as its neighbourhoods. A riverside park, an exhibition garden and a wooded ridge each connect differently with the built city. Following those relationships reveals a broader Erfurt, in which medieval streets and large residential developments share the landscape shaped by the Gera.

Following the water north

Erfurt’s Gera connects places with markedly different urban characters. In the historic centre, the Merchants’ Bridge turns a river crossing into an inhabited street, with houses standing directly above the water. Farther north, the setting opens out around Nordpark. Here the river is accompanied by larger green areas rather than tightly grouped old buildings. The contrast gives the watercourse a useful role in understanding the city: the same river passes through both intimate urban spaces and a more expansive public landscape.

Nordpark was itself created through changes to the river environment. The Gera was moved into a new channel in 1910, allowing the former floodplain to be used differently. The park took shape during the 1920s. Its greenery therefore reflects deliberate urban improvement rather than an untouched fragment of countryside. Set among residential areas, it connects the history of water management with the everyday needs of a growing city.

A different pattern of housing

Johannesplatz, to the east of the northern river corridor, introduces the larger scale of prefabricated housing. The district’s buildings and the spaces between them differ sharply from the close grain of the old centre. Comparing these places reveals changing ideas about how homes should relate to streets and shared outdoor areas. The difference is visible in the overall arrangement of the neighbourhoods, without needing to reduce either one to a single landmark. Erfurt’s identity includes both the enclosed street and the more open residential composition.

Gardens shaped for display

On the western side, egapark adds another kind of landscape. Its development is associated with horticultural exhibitions, notably the international garden exhibition of 1961. Planting, paths and garden areas form a consciously arranged environment. That makes it distinct from Nordpark’s riverside setting and from the woodland to the south. The city’s green spaces are not interchangeable: each has its own spatial organisation and historical purpose.

The southern wooded rise

The Steigerwald occupies rising ground south of the built centre. Its wooded slopes create a different boundary from the flatter land beside the Gera. This helps explain why the city meets its surroundings differently on its northern and southern sides. Taken together, the Steiger, egapark and the northern neighbourhoods place the famous old centre within a wider setting. Erfurt emerges as a connected landscape of homes, gardens and water, with the inhabited bridge providing one particularly memorable expression of that relationship.
