Essen.Werden, the Ruhr and Villa Hügel
Rectangular wooden city map made from black lacquered MDF.
About the product
At the western end of Lake Baldeney, two different histories of Essen come into view. Werden retains an older centre around St Ludgerus, while Villa Hügel stands above the water to the north as the former home of the Krupp family. The Ruhr connects compact streets with slopes, parkland and the lake’s outlet. The contrast between a close-knit settlement and an extensive hillside estate is particularly striking. Religious origins, industrial wealth and a transformed river landscape meet within a small area. The western lake provides their shared setting, while differences in height, scale and purpose allow each place to retain a clear identity of its own.

Werden and Villa Hügel above the western lake
Werden grew around a religious foundation; Villa Hügel was built for the Krupp family centuries later. Near the western end of Lake Baldeney, these distinct histories face a river landscape that was itself reshaped by engineering. The relationship between valley streets, elevated grounds and water gives the area unusual historical depth.
The religious roots of Werden
Werden’s history is closely associated with the abbey founded by Liudger. St Ludgerus preserves that connection within the present-day centre. The church belongs to a compact network of streets and buildings whose scale differs markedly from the larger sites of northern Essen. It anchors a settlement history that began long before the expansion of the industrial city.
Liudger’s name connects the building with both the foundation and the memory of the saint. The significance of the place consequently extends beyond one architectural period. A religious centre influenced the surrounding settlement over many generations. That relationship remains understandable today, with the basilica providing a strong point of reference among Werden’s houses and streets.
A home that expressed industrial power
Villa Hügel occupies higher ground to the north, above the Ruhr valley. Alfred Krupp had the house built between 1870 and 1873. It served as a family residence while expressing the scale of the family’s economic and social position. The large building and extensive park present a very different spatial arrangement from the closely built centre of Werden.
Elevation reinforces the distinction. The estate has distance from surrounding development and a landscape setting of its own. Although it was not a place of production, its history belongs to Essen’s industrial development. Private life and representation formed part of that world alongside factories and working grounds. The villa reveals the residential environment of industrial ownership rather than the spaces in which manufacturing took place.
Lake Baldeney was created by damming the Ruhr in the early 1930s. The intervention changed the setting between places that already had substantial histories. At the western end, the broad water surface meets the outlet and the continuing river. This transitional landscape connects the older settlement and the hillside estate without turning them into a uniform district.
Werden remains a compact place in the valley, while Villa Hügel occupies a more expansive position above it. Water and greenery open a space between them, making differences of scale and height especially legible. Religious foundation, industrial family residence and engineered river landscape can therefore be understood together. Each represents a different way of using land and giving it meaning. Their close geographical relationship gives this western part of Lake Baldeney a character that cannot be explained by the water alone.
