About the product

From Seepark in the west to Schlossberg in the east, this Freiburg view extends beyond the familiar old town. The minster remains a clear reference point, joined by the botanical garden, the Dreisam corridor and Vauban. Dense central streets give way to gardens and neighbourhoods with different patterns of development. White lacquered MDF gives this Classic map a restrained single-layer finish. Portrait format leaves room for the route from Seepark to Schlossberg and keeps the contrasting densities of the neighbourhoods within one city plan.

City guide

Freiburg between the Dreisam and the forest slopes

Freiburg's position beside the Black Forest matters as much as its famous minster. Seepark, the botanical garden and Vauban draw attention beyond the old town. Together with Schlossberg, they reveal a city where residential districts, places of learning and different kinds of landscape have developed in close proximity over time.

Where the forest meets the city

Freiburg occupies the meeting point between the Black Forest and the plain. Schlossberg makes that relationship visible close to the historic centre: wooded slopes rise beside the older streets, while the built city extends more freely westward and southward. This uneven relationship with the landscape is more useful than imagining a city growing equally in every direction around its minster.

The minster nevertheless provides a strong reference point. Its construction combined Romanesque beginnings with later Gothic work, and it became a cathedral only in 1827. Different neighbourhoods developed around this older centre. Considering them together reveals several periods of urban growth rather than one continuous medieval story.

Landscapes with different purposes

Seepark in Betzenhausen was created for the 1986 regional garden exhibition. The Flückigersee forms its most obvious open surface, surrounded by paths and landscaped grounds. Unlike the forested slope, this is a deliberately organised urban park. Its position beside residential areas helps explain its everyday recreational role.

The botanical garden to the north has another purpose, connecting living plant collections with scientific study. Comparing these spaces shows why green areas should not be treated as interchangeable gaps in the city. A garden may serve education, recreation or a transition towards a larger landscape. Each relationship produces a different pattern of paths, boundaries and neighbouring uses.

A later chapter in housing

Vauban occupies former barracks land in southern Freiburg. Its conversion into a residential district brought questions of energy use, transport and shared open space into the planning of new homes. It represents a different chapter from the older centre, with urban living approached through a more explicit set of environmental and social concerns.

Everyday routes link these different settings. The Dreisam corridor cuts across the built fabric, while streets on either side belong to their own neighbourhood networks. Following the transitions between dense blocks and open ground helps make sense of the city as a whole.

Seepark and Vauban offer different answers to the question of how Freiburg can grow while making room for open space. One centres on a substantial park landscape; the other concerns the organisation of a residential district. Schlossberg, by contrast, occupies terrain whose presence predates those planning decisions. These three places resist a simple division between nature and city. They show landscape being inherited, deliberately reshaped or brought into the experience of everyday housing along Freiburg's western and southern expansion.
