Gelsenkirchen has several centres, stretching from Buer to the southern heart of the city. Buer Town Hall, Hans-Sachs-Haus and Nordsternpark trace the relationship between civic life and former industrial land. Broad routes link neighbourhoods and large parks across this wooden city map. The material lends a quiet warmth to a city shaped by industry and the spaces between its districts.

City guide

How Gelsenkirchen’s centres grew together

Gelsenkirchen extends well beyond its southern city centre. Buer, large recreational grounds and the neighbourhoods between them are equally important to its shape. A broad view reveals how earlier settlements, industrial sites and later public spaces became parts of one city while retaining distinct centres and very different urban scales.

Civic buildings tell a larger story

Buer Town Hall and the Hans-Sachs-Haus stand some distance apart. Their positions offer a useful introduction to the formation of modern Gelsenkirchen. Buer, Horst and Gelsenkirchen were united in 1928. For many years afterwards, the council continued to meet mainly in Buer, while the mayor was based in the Hans-Sachs-Haus farther south. This division helps explain the lasting importance of more than one civic centre. Reading the two buildings together makes sense of an extended urban area whose origins cannot be represented adequately by a single central point.

Neighbourhoods at different scales

Residential streets, major roads and much larger sites occupy the ground between those centres. The city developed through the close relationship between settlement and industry, producing a pattern of dense blocks interrupted by extensive grounds and open areas. The Veltins-Arena introduces a major sporting focus in the northern part of the city. ZOOM Erlebniswelt lies farther east. Both have a footprint quite unlike an ordinary residential block. Their positions show how public destinations are distributed throughout Gelsenkirchen, rather than gathered around one historic square or a single central shopping district.

Nordsternpark within the wider city

Nordsternpark provides a substantial open space to the west. It links neighbouring residential districts and illustrates the changing role of land formerly used for mining. The site became a landscape park in connection with the 1997 Federal Garden Show. Within the wider urban pattern, its relationship to surrounding neighbourhoods and waterways is especially significant. Here, a former working landscape has become a public space connecting different parts of the city. It adds a continuous landscape element to a composition otherwise punctuated by civic centres and large recreational destinations.

Connections between the landmarks

The distance separating Buer from the southern centre is as characteristic of Gelsenkirchen as any individual landmark. Together, these places reveal several scales of urban life: the streets around civic buildings, extensive sporting and leisure grounds, and the routes that connect them. Understanding the city means following these relationships across the intervening neighbourhoods. The northern area has its own centres and history, while the southern area retains another set of focal points. The continuity between them gives Gelsenkirchen its overall shape, with densely built districts and broad spaces forming an unmistakably varied urban landscape.
