Göttingen.University city and green research landscapes
Round wooden city map made from oiled beech – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Göttingen’s historic centre connects with botanical gardens, university districts and the Kiessee. The Gänseliesel fountain and railway station orient the central area, while green research landscapes extend northwards. Wood gives these contrasting urban spaces a natural material setting. The map brings scientific life, established streets and the more open southern landscape into one connected portrait of the university city.

Göttingen’s scientific life within the growing city
Göttingen’s university has shaped the city since the eighteenth century, but its teaching grounds and collections occupy several urban settings. The Old Botanical Garden adjoins the historic centre, while the Forest Botanical Garden belongs to the northern university area. The Gänseliesel, railway station and Kiessee add civic identity, everyday connections and southern green space.
University history belongs to the city
Göttingen’s university opened in 1737. Scientific work has since become a major strand in the city’s development. Its physical presence is not restricted to one enclosed estate. Historic streets, public squares and university locations belong to a shared urban fabric. The railway station west of the older centre adds another reference, connecting arrival with residential neighbourhoods and academic places. These relationships matter because they make university history part of ordinary city life. Göttingen’s academic identity consequently extends across different periods and spatial scales, rather than appearing solely as a collection of separate institutional buildings.
A garden beside the historic centre
The Old Botanical Garden occupies ground at the edge of the historic city. Its association with botanical teaching and research introduces academic history through a green urban space. Plant collections have a different purpose from grounds designed only for recreation: they organise living variety as something that can be studied. At the same time, the garden remains close to surrounding streets and buildings. This position demonstrates how scientific institutions can continue within an established city. The planted grounds form a distinct setting without losing their relationship to the central neighbourhoods that have developed around them.
Northern collections of trees and shrubs
The Forest Botanical Garden belongs to the northern university area. Its woody plant collection extends the botanical perspective towards trees, shrubs and their scientific significance. The location differs from that of the older central garden, standing farther from the historic squares within a larger academic environment. Taken together, the two gardens make the university’s geographical development visible. They connect an earlier relationship with the inner city to subsequent areas in the north. This distribution is essential to the wider portrait because it presents research as part of urban growth, with different collections occupying different settings rather than one interchangeable landscape.
A civic fountain and a southern lake
The Gänseliesel stands in the historic centre as one of Göttingen’s familiar civic symbols. Its smaller scale adds a public square setting to the larger institutional locations. South of the centre, the Kiessee and surrounding green grounds establish a more open relationship between settlement and landscape. Connected neighbourhoods lie between that southern area, the central squares and the northern collections. Göttingen therefore emerges as more than an old town or a university destination alone. Its character comes from research, shared public places, residential streets and different forms of greenery, brought together through the ordinary fabric of a living city.
