Hamm.Lippe floodplain to Maximilianpark
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled maple – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Hamm stretches from its historic centre through the Lippe floodplain to former industrial sites. St Paul's Church, Heessen Castle and Maximilianpark represent different periods, linked by neighbourhoods, transport routes and open land. Their contrasting forms come together in a restrained wooden map. The material complements the broad landscape between districts and the changing density of streets and park grounds.

Hamm’s historic centre and transformed parkland
Hamm’s principal places are distributed across a broad urban area. Church, station, castle and former colliery each tell a different story. Their connections with the Lippe floodplain and intervening neighbourhoods reveal a city where an older centre, industrial development and substantial areas of landscape form a shared geographical setting.
The old centre and a transport focus
St Paul’s Church is one of Hamm’s principal historic buildings. Its surroundings form a compact urban core, while the main railway station establishes another focus farther west. Their proximity connects earlier urban history with the importance of modern transport. Closely connected streets between church and station form part of a continuous central area. The station also opens into a wider network of tracks and longer-distance routes. Its scale therefore differs from the smaller plots and streets around the historic centre, introducing another layer of development within a relatively short distance.
Open landscape to the north
The Lippe floodplain is one of Hamm’s important open spaces. It brings a broader landscape close to the built city and creates transitions between neighbourhoods. Heessen Castle stands north of the central districts, adding an independent historic place to the wider setting. Its position demonstrates that significant older sites are distributed beyond the immediate city centre. The surrounding open ground creates a different sense of density and distance. Settlement and landscape remain close neighbours here, connected through routes and adjacent built areas rather than separated into entirely independent parts of the city.
A park made from industrial ground
Maximilianpark lies east of the centre on the site of the former Maximilian colliery. The industrial grounds were transformed for the 1984 state garden show. The well-known glass elephant emerged as part of that reinterpretation of the existing industrial complex. The place demonstrates how technical buildings and open ground could acquire new public purposes after their original use ended. Within the broader city, its extensive footprint remains distinctive. It introduces a scale unlike the historic centre and contributes a separate spatial character rooted in both industrial history and landscape transformation.
A city connected across longer distances
A substantial part of Hamm’s urban area lies between the main station and Maximilianpark. Residential streets, larger routes and more open spaces establish the connections between individual landmarks. The broad view therefore reveals more than a collection of separate destinations. It shows how different phases of development remain spatially related. The older centre, a castle towards the north and a reused mining landscape each retain their own qualities. Together, they form a city in which industrial history and open landscape are as important to the overall structure as the compact streets around its historic core.
