Hanover.Old town beside the Leine
Round wooden city map in oiled maple, with two layers and a black backing plate.
About the product
Hanover’s old town brings churches, a former palace and civic buildings into close proximity. This crop takes in Marktkirche, Kreuzkirche, Leineschloss and the New Town Hall, with the Leine linking their surroundings through its changing course. There is no engraving on this design, leaving the circular map to concentrate on the street network. An oiled maple front sits against a black backing plate, giving the cut pattern contrast within a two-layer construction. Three diameters offer this view of the historic centre at different sizes.

Hanover’s old town beside the Leine
Several strands of Hanover’s history can be followed within a small part of its centre. Marktkirche, Kreuzkirche and Leineschloss represent different public roles, while the New Town Hall adds a later layer. The Leine connects their surroundings through a changing river edge and repeatedly shifts the view of the city.
A church within close urban streets
Marktkirche is one of the defining buildings of Hanover’s old town. Its brick Gothic architecture and substantial tower give it an unmistakable presence. The present church originated in the fourteenth century. Rebuilt after severe wartime damage, it continued to serve as an important public place within the city.
Its effect becomes particularly clear in relation to the surrounding streets. A large tower rises above an enclosed urban setting rather than standing within an extensive park. Short routes pass the building and connect with nearby squares. A walk therefore presents repeated encounters with the church, often from close and changing viewpoints.
A palace beside the water
Leineschloss was a residence of Hanover’s rulers and now houses the parliament of Lower Saxony. Its history connects courtly and parliamentary functions. The riverside position gives the building a different spatial relationship from the church. One aspect belongs to the street network, while another addresses the Leine.
The river can be followed as an independent line within the old town. It does not simply mirror the arrangement of the buildings. Curves and crossings create changing views, showing how water and development place limits on one another. These encounters introduce a different rhythm from the one produced by a regular grid of streets.
Changing scales towards the town hall
Kreuzkirche establishes another historic focus to the north. This Gothic hall church occupies a setting different from that of Marktkirche. Its surroundings invite comparison between the scales of individual places within the old town. Important buildings do not all require the same amount of space or the same visibility from a distance.
South of Leineschloss, the city opens towards the New Town Hall. Completed in 1913, it occupies a more generous setting beside Maschpark. The city models displayed inside represent different stages in Hanover’s development, including the profound effects of war and reconstruction.
Exploring the area produces a sequence of contrasting public spaces: close streets, river edge, church surroundings and parkland. Attention to those transitions helps explain the old town as a developing urban relationship rather than an unchanged fragment of the past. Older places have acquired new uses and neighbours, while the Leine continues to provide a distinctive line through their shared setting.
