Hanover.City overview
Rectangular wooden city map of City overview made from oiled oak.
About the product
Formal gardens, a long lakeshore and established neighbourhood streets give Hanover several distinct patterns. This overview takes in Herrenhausen Gardens, Linden, the New Town Hall and Maschsee, extending east towards the zoo. The routes between them explain how those separate places belong to the same city. A single layer of oiled oak forms the classic rectangular map, bringing natural grain to a design centred on Hanover’s wider street network.

Hanover from Herrenhausen to Linden and Maschsee
Hanover’s character extends beyond its central streets. Formal gardens, an artificial lake and independent residential districts give the city several directions of growth and movement. Looking from Herrenhausen through Linden towards Maschsee reveals how designed landscapes and ordinary urban life remain closely connected across the wider inner city.
A formal landscape to the northwest
Herrenhausen Gardens provide a substantial focus northwest of the centre. The Great Garden is particularly defined by geometric paths, hedges and water features. Its origins lie in courtly ideas of representation, and its clear arrangement remains visible even without examining every individual feature.
Compared with surrounding streets, the garden reads as a deliberately composed whole. Routes do more than connect one point with another; they contribute to a larger spatial design. The transition towards the built-up city therefore brings two kinds of order into view: a coherent garden figure and the more varied network of everyday urban movement.
Linden and the central city
Linden broadens the view towards the west. Its neighbourhood streets and local centres represent a Hanover that cannot be explained solely through the prominent buildings of the centre. Residential areas and larger routes have their own rhythm here. Including Linden helps reveal the city as a sequence of distinct districts rather than a single central place with surrounding edges.
South of the inner city, the New Town Hall introduces a different scale. Completed in 1913, the building has a close relationship with neighbouring Maschpark. Its dome and open setting establish a strong presence, while the green spaces mediate between a representative civic building and the larger landscapes further south.
A lake made by the city
Maschsee is an artificial lake, created during the 1930s and opened in 1936. Its history demonstrates that a water space now perceived as an established part of the landscape can result from a deliberate urban project. Long banks provide a clear direction within southern Hanover and support several forms of recreation.
The zoo, east of the centre, adds another substantial leisure area. Together these places distribute important public destinations across several directions. They are not gathered along one central axis, and each occupies a different relationship with surrounding neighbourhoods.
This distribution is fundamental to understanding Hanover’s form. Garden, lake, park and residential district have different purposes and different boundaries. A route beside a formal garden offers a different experience from a street in Linden or a path along Maschsee. The wider view makes those differences comparable and shows how the intervening built-up areas connect them. Hanover’s coherence lies in those relationships as much as in any individual landmark.
