Izmir.Konak, Kültürpark and Kadifekale
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled walnut – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Izmir opens towards the bay and rises inland to the castle hill of Kadifekale. The Konak clock tower, Kültürpark and Alsancak station link the historic centre, green space and later urban routes. Open waterfront and branching streets give the map its contrasting shapes. Crafted as a wooden city map, it brings natural warmth to a city shaped by sea, trade and hillside neighbourhoods.

Izmir between the bay and the citadel hill
Izmir’s centre occupies the changing ground between coast and hillside. Konak, Kadifekale, Kültürpark and Alsancak establish different focal points within that setting. Together, they reveal how older districts, modern public spaces and transport connections relate to the bay and organise a central urban area with several distinct historical layers.
Konak and the coastal city
Konak Square is one of Izmir’s best-known public spaces, with the clock tower providing a clear architectural focus. Here, the more densely built city opens towards the coast and acquires a different scale from the smaller streets farther inland. Square and waterfront are closely related but serve different spatial roles. The square gathers a central urban area, while the shoreline establishes a longer connection along the water. Their proximity demonstrates the close relationship between public space and maritime setting in Izmir, where the coast forms an active part of the city’s central geography.
Kadifekale above the streets
Kadifekale occupies an elevated position southeast of Konak. The historic fortification introduces a different reference point within the city plan. Moving from the lower coastal area towards the hillside means entering a different set of spatial conditions. Streets respond to the terrain, and buildings occupy the slopes differently from level ground. Kadifekale makes the relationship between urban history and topography especially clear. Izmir’s older city is rooted in the waterfront, but it also has a significant historic focus on higher ground, connecting the coast with a broader landscape behind it.
A large public space within the city
Kültürpark was established in 1936 under the leadership of Mayor Behçet Uz. It was closely connected with the development of trade fairs and the international relationships of the young republic. Its extensive continuous grounds contrast with the surrounding neighbourhoods. Here, the city opens internally rather than along the coast. The park consequently represents another phase in Izmir’s development. Green space, culture and the history of modern public planning occupy the same area, creating a substantial element whose scale continues to shape the central urban layout and its relationship with neighbouring streets.
Alsancak and the northern connection
Alsancak station stands north of the park and belongs to Izmir’s transport and commercial history. Opened in 1858, it adds an important railway place to the central composition. Different kinds of streets occupy the connections between station, Kültürpark, Konak and Kadifekale. Their relationship reveals a coastal city whose development followed several directions. Maritime connections, hillside settlement and larger planned spaces remain distinct but closely associated. This combination gives central Izmir its character, which emerges from the interaction of different urban patterns rather than from a single square or waterfront promenade.
