About the product

Kiel's western waterfront links the former fish market hall, castle area, Kunsthalle and Landeshaus in a clear sequence beside the fjord. Open water views alternate with streets, forecourts and buildings set farther inland. This view recalls walks along the shore and journeys from the centre towards the northern waterfront. Portrait format stays close to the western shore and its sequence of public places. Oiled walnut and a backing panel give depth to the cut streets, with the fjord setting the eastern edge of the district.

Kiel's western waterfront: trade, art and public life

A sequence of public places follows the western fjord from the former fish market hall towards the state parliament. The castle area and art museum stand slightly inland. This waterfront brings maritime memory, visual art and government into close proximity, while ordinary routes continue to connect the centre with streets farther north.

A market hall beside the water

Kiel's former fish auction hall at Sartorikai became the Maritime Museum in 1978. The building connects two periods: trade in a perishable commodity at the harbour, and a later public interest in maritime history. Its original purpose explains its waterfront position. It is consequently more than an interchangeable container for museum objects.

Beginning at the hall ties the western shore to the practical work that once brought people to the harbour. Roads and paths follow the fjord, while individual institutions occupy plots with their own entrances and approaches. The water's edge creates continuity without making every place identical. Moving between an open view and a more enclosed street reveals this changing relationship particularly clearly.

The castle area and the Kunsthalle

Kiel's castle site recalls an older political centre. Alteration, destruction and reconstruction belong to its history, so the present ensemble should not be read as a completely surviving historic residence. Its position near the fjord nevertheless remains important. Routes between the castle area, city centre and waterfront connect different layers of the urban past.

Farther north, the Kunsthalle introduces a setting for visual art. Standing slightly inland, it changes the visitor's attention from movement along the shore towards an individual building. Its institutional history differs from that of the fish market hall. An art collection and maritime commerce created different kinds of public place within a relatively short distance.

A parliament in a former naval building

The Landeshaus was built in the nineteenth century for the naval academy. Since 1950 it has accommodated Schleswig-Holstein's parliament. This change of use is essential to interpreting the building. Its conspicuous waterfront location remained, while military education gave way to parliamentary activity. A later debating chamber added another architectural layer to the ensemble.

Such changes cannot be understood through façades alone. Entrances, open areas and relationships with public paths also show how a building participates in the contemporary city. Views across the fjord provide distance, while the landward side supplies specific destinations and turning points.

The former fish hall retains a different relationship with the fjord from that of the state parliament. At the hall, water explains an original connection with work and trade; at the parliament, it forms the open edge of a political institution. Between them, the castle area and Kunsthalle stand slightly inland. This sequence of setbacks is crucial to Kiel's western shore. Public culture may occupy a converted harbour building or emerge from an entirely different institutional history only a short distance away.
