Kiel.
Classic wooden city map in natural oiled MDF, portrait format.
About the product
Kiel gathers around a fjord that reaches almost to the main station. Hörn Bridge, the central districts, university grounds and state parliament provide clear points of orientation. Streets meet waterfronts, while larger institutions and residential areas introduce different scales. Natural oiled MDF forms a single cut layer in this Classic map. Its portrait layout follows the fjord, keeping the waterfronts and streets of the inner city together without an additional backing panel.

Kiel: a city around the head of the fjord
Kiel Fjord reaches deep into the urban area. The station and Hörn Bridge mark its southern end, while the university and state parliament establish different northern reference points. Considering their relationships explains a city shaped jointly by maritime movement, education and public administration, with water influencing many ordinary journeys across its neighbourhoods.
Arriving where the fjord ends
Kiel's waterfront reaches one of its principal arrival points. The main station stands beside the southern harbour area, where its present location was established during the expansion of transport and port facilities in the late nineteenth century. Rail and water are closely connected here through the city's development rather than by accident.
Hörn Bridge crosses the innermost section of the fjord. Its folding mechanism responds to two kinds of movement sharing the same space: pedestrians need to cross, while vessels require an opening through the waterway. This relatively small structure makes a central Kiel relationship particularly clear. Land routes and maritime activity must repeatedly accommodate one another.
From the Hörn, urban districts extend north along the shores. Harbour areas, streets, public buildings and homes occupy different stretches. Water offers a continuous reference but also creates a boundary that shapes journeys. The two shores should consequently not be imagined as matching halves of a symmetrical city.
Learning, government and maritime memory
Kiel University was founded in 1665. Its larger university area northwest of the inner city represents Kiel as a place of education and research. Buildings and open spaces follow academic requirements rather than the needs of a harbour. Yet these different functions remain connected by everyday journeys across the city.
The Landeshaus beside the western shore has another institutional history. Built as a naval academy, it has housed Schleswig-Holstein's state parliament since 1950. Its transition from military education to parliamentary use shows how a prominent building can acquire a fundamentally different purpose while retaining its position in the urban landscape.
The former fish market hall now houses the Maritime Museum. Its subject remains connected to the working history of the site itself. Museum, university and parliament perform distinct public roles, broadening an image of Kiel that might otherwise be limited to ships and the sea.
At the Hörn, Kiel's relationship with the fjord becomes particularly tangible: an extended body of water ends among urban routes. The Hörnbrücke responds with a crossing, while the nearby station provides a major place of arrival. University and state parliament lie farther north and belong to different institutional settings. The fjord does not gather them into one centre. It supplies a shared direction from which educational, harbour and administrative spaces extend inland in different ways and over different distances.
