Constance.City Overview
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled maple – two layers with a black back plate and frame.
About the product
Constance extends from its old town and waterfront towards university grounds in the north. Schnetztor, Rheintorturm and the university connect the historic core with the wider urban area. In this wooden city map, dense streets open towards water while northern routes keep the view broader than a harbour scene. Landscape, housing and academic life together explain the city's distinctive shape.

Constance: Lakeside streets and a city across the river
Water gives Constance its setting and influences how its districts connect. The historic centre lies south of the Rhine crossings, while much of the modern city extends northwards. Bringing both sides and the university into one view reveals why the familiar waterfront represents only part of the city's physical identity.
A city at a water crossing
Constance's position where the Rhine leaves Lake Constance creates an unusual urban structure. Water provides open space, limits expansion and directs movement towards particular crossings. The historic centre consequently occupies a different setting from the northern districts. Looking only from the harbour reveals a celebrated aspect of the city, but leaves much of its connected urban area unexplained. A wider view shows how growth extended beyond the older core and why the routes between the banks are fundamental to understanding the present city, rather than merely convenient links between attractions.
Gates and earlier boundaries
Schnetztor and Rheintorturm recall the town's former defences and approaches. Their positions identify different sides of the historic centre. Between them, streets and public spaces form a comparatively dense pattern, distinct from the larger arrangements found in younger neighbourhoods. The towers therefore serve as clues to earlier boundaries even though the modern city reaches well beyond them. They also demonstrate that a historical town is defined by entrances, routes and edges as much as by individual buildings. Reading those relationships adds depth to the familiar old-town view.
The city to the north
Petershausen introduces an important part of Constance beyond the older centre. Northern development includes housing, transport corridors and public institutions. Farther north, the university demonstrates the scale of the city's twentieth-century transformation. Academic uses require different spaces and connections from those of a historic town centre. Routes towards them pass through several kinds of neighbourhood. This explains why modern Constance cannot be described simply as an enlarged old town. It is a connected collection of urban settings whose different functions remain visible in the way streets and open areas are arranged.
Keeping the waterfront in context
The Imperia at the harbour is a widely recognised reference, with open water giving its setting a much larger scale than the streets behind it. That waterfront remains central to the portrait, but northern neighbourhoods broaden its meaning. The most revealing transitions run from old streets to crossings, from shore to residential areas, and onwards towards higher ground. Following them connects the city's historical significance with its everyday geography. Constance emerges as both a place beside the water and an extensive residential and academic city, with neither identity fully explaining the other on its own.
