Krefeld.Stadtwald to Linn
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled oak – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Krefeld's regular central street grid opens towards Stadtwald and the older settlement of Linn. Kaiser Wilhelm Museum and the main station anchor the centre, while Linn Castle marks a separate historic focus to the east. The map brings ordered streets, broad green spaces and smaller urban patterns together. Wood gives this varied composition a natural, restrained warmth.

Krefeld’s planned centre and older landscapes
Krefeld combines a deliberately expanded centre with substantial green space and older settlements. The area between the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, Stadtwald and Linn Castle contains different forms of urban development. Reading them together reveals a city shaped by textile production, transport and historic places with origins independent of the later industrial centre.
A centre shaped by planned expansion
The development of central Krefeld is closely connected with the growth of textile production. During the early nineteenth century, Adolph von Vagedes gave urban expansion a more ordered form. His plans, approved in 1819, enclosed the growing centre with an elongated rectangular arrangement of broad streets known as the Wälle. This framework differs from the irregular closeness of many medieval towns. It belongs to a period when growth was being consciously organised. The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum provides a cultural reference point within this central setting of street grids and substantial urban axes.
The railway station at the southern edge
The main station stands south of the central area. Its position and spreading railway tracks introduce a scale quite different from the neighbouring residential blocks. The station connects longer-distance movement with the local street network and provides a clear southern reference point in the broader urban landscape. From here, built neighbourhoods extend northwards and eastwards in varied patterns. Krefeld therefore appears as a combination of more regular streets, larger transport spaces and areas with their own histories. The transitions between these forms are important to the shape of the city.
The Stadtwald within urban life
North of the centre, the Stadtwald occupies a much larger continuous area than the smaller planted spaces between building blocks. Its history belongs to the creation of public recreational grounds in a growing city. Spatially, the change from closely connected streets to extensive green ground is especially significant. The Stadtwald establishes its own focal area while remaining closely associated with the surrounding neighbourhoods. It demonstrates that Krefeld’s development included substantial open spaces as well as additional buildings and roads. These grounds give the northern part of the urban area a different rhythm and a more open structure.
Linn’s independent historic character
Linn Castle lies east of the central city and belongs to an older settlement with its own history. The castle and its surroundings follow a different spatial logic from the planned extensions of central Krefeld. Historic buildings gather in a more compact core, accompanied by relatively open ground. This contrast is particularly revealing in a broad city view. Textile production, railway development, recreational landscape and an older castle settlement remain recognisable layers within one urban area. The intervening neighbourhoods connect them, allowing several distinct origins to contribute to the present form of Krefeld.
