About the product

Lindau has two closely connected faces. The historic island sits just off the shore, while Aeschach, Reutin and Bad Schachen form part of the broader mainland city. A bridge and railway causeway provide access, but water remains a clear boundary between the two settings. On the mainland, residential streets alternate with gardens, villas and more open stretches of shore. The familiar harbour therefore belongs to a city much larger than its island lanes. Lindau’s character comes from the contrast between a tightly enclosed old town and a more extended settlement beside Lake Constance, with each neighbourhood finding a different relationship to the same water.

Lindau’s island and mainland shores

The island supplies Lindau’s best-known image, but the mainland explains its wider shape. Aeschach faces the historic centre, Reutin continues eastwards and Bad Schachen follows the shore to the west. Their different patterns of streets, gardens and buildings show several ways of living beside the same lake.

A town contained by water

Lindau’s old town occupies an island in Lake Constance. Limited ground produces a close arrangement of lanes, squares and buildings. The water creates a clear outer edge, while the mainland connections concentrate arrival at particular points. This setting explains the compactness of the historic town more effectively than considering its individual façades in isolation.

At the harbour, the lighthouse and Bavarian Lion give the approach from the lake a recognisable architectural form. They belong to a larger inhabited island, with streets and public spaces continuing behind the waterfront. The island is a historic settlement, a place of movement and an everyday neighbourhood at the same time. Its significance extends beyond the celebrated view from the water.

The facing shore at Aeschach

Aeschach occupies the mainland north of the island centre. A bridge and railway causeway connect the two and help define the nearby water space. The Kleiner See makes this relationship particularly clear. The shores are close, but they remain distinct sides of a visible separation. Moving between land and water over such a short distance is fundamental to the experience of Lindau.

On the mainland, the pattern changes. Streets can spread in several directions, and development is no longer contained by an island perimeter. Aeschach provides an important transition between the historic centre and the wider city. Looking only at the island misses this relationship and gives an incomplete impression of Lindau’s actual settlement form.

Reutin continues the urban area to the east. Its position shows how the city extends along the shore and into the land behind it. Present-day Lindau brings together several older places, connected through streets, buildings and shared urban activities. The lake provides a common geographical direction without giving every neighbourhood the same character.

Bad Schachen lies to the west, where villas, parks and gardens establish a different relationship with the shoreline. Larger grounds and green spaces replace the close texture of the island lanes. This contrast helps explain Lindau’s identity as both an island town and a garden city. The concentration of the old centre and the more open mainland landscape belong together. Seen in combination, they reveal a range of approaches to housing, public waterfronts and formal grounds within one lakeside city, rather than a single historic enclave surrounded by unrelated suburbs.
