Lisbon.Baixa, Castle and Tagus Waterfront
A landscape oak city map of Lisbon's Baixa and castle hill, made in two wooden layers.
About the product
Straight streets through Lisbon's Baixa connect Rossio with Praça do Comércio. To the east, the ground rises towards São Jorge Castle, with the cathedral also included in the crop. This landscape map joins the lower city, castle hill and Tagus waterfront. Its cut surface is made from oiled oak, with a black back plate completing the two-layer wooden design.

Lisbon's Baixa between Rossio and the castle hill
The regular streets of Lisbon's Baixa lie close to the raised castle and cathedral district. Praça do Comércio opens southwards to the Tagus, while Rossio establishes a northern public space. Their relationship reveals a compact transition between the planned lower city and older sites on the adjoining higher ground.
A lower city between two squares
Rossio, officially Praça de D. Pedro IV, is one of Lisbon's established public places. It lies at the northern end of the central Baixa area and has served as an important urban reference for centuries. Its position gives the regular streets a recognisable boundary while connecting the lower city with the districts beyond it.
To the south, Praça do Comércio opens towards the Tagus. The location is associated with the former royal palace, destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. The later square belongs to the city's reconstruction. Between Rossio and the waterfront, the Baixa consequently forms a clear arrangement of streets, blocks and substantial public spaces linked through the lower ground.
The squares perform different roles within this setting. Rossio is enclosed within the built city, whereas Praça do Comércio mediates between buildings and an open river landscape. Their connection passes through a regular urban area that differs from the neighbouring hills. This contrast makes the Baixa recognisable as a particular part of Lisbon, rather than simply another stretch of central streets.
Higher ground retains another pattern
East of the Baixa, the land rises towards São Jorge Castle. The fortification occupies an elevated site with a history extending well before the reconstruction after 1755. Walls and towers reflect the requirements of a defensive complex. The transition from lower straight streets to the castle height reveals two very different ways of organising the same local terrain.
The cathedral stands south of the castle and east of the lower Baixa. It also combines earlier building fabric with later changes. Earthquakes and subsequent restoration form part of its history. Its present appearance is therefore not an unchanged record of one period, but the result of repeated adaptation at an established historical place within the city.
Short connections link cathedral, castle and lower streets, yet the terrain makes their differences apparent. Geographical proximity does not produce identical urban settings. Elevation, street direction and building types distinguish them. Within this compact area, several histories can be understood alongside one another without treating the centre as a single uniform old town.
The Tagus remains the shared geographical reference at the southern edge. The city descends from higher places towards its bank, while the Baixa provides a particularly clear link between an internal square and the water. That relationship gives central Lisbon its distinctive form: a planned lower district lies beside older elevated sites and opens onto the river through a substantial public square.
