Lünen.City Overview
Square wooden city map made from blue lacquered MDF.
About the product
Northern lakes, central streets and the southern Seepark give Lünen a varied outline. The town hall and Schloss Schwansbell sit among different waterside and green settings that open up the street network. This wooden city map connects them in a broad overview, revealing the transition from a compact centre to former industrial landscapes and substantial recreational spaces in the eastern Ruhr region.

Lünen: A river town and landscapes transformed
Lünen combines a historic centre with districts shaped by industry and transport. River, canal and lakes provide an equally important structure. Looking from the Cappenberger See towards the Seepark shows how older places and transformed landscapes now work together, linking distinct neighbourhoods within the larger city and its everyday surroundings.
Industrial land becomes a park
The Seepark represents the transformation of a landscape affected by industrial activity. Around the former Preußen colliery, a recreational area was developed in connection with the 1996 state garden show. Its paths and open spaces therefore tell a story of deliberate reuse. Landscape here is not simply the opposite of industry. It is the result of successive human interventions and changing priorities. The park adds a chapter about industry's aftermath to the history of work itself, making both phases part of the same place and of the city's wider identity.
More than one kind of water landscape
The Lippe is fundamental to Lünen's geography, while canal and lakes structure other parts of the city. These waters have different origins and functions. They should not be treated as a single, unchanged natural landscape. Some establish long connections, others create broad open surfaces or form part of larger recreational areas. The Cappenberger See in the north provides a different reference from the southern water spaces. Comparing them reveals how open areas contribute to urban orientation in several ways, interrupting the street pattern while also connecting neighbourhoods with places beyond their immediate surroundings.
A centre within a wider urban area
The town hall represents the civic role of central Lünen. Streets and public spaces gather around a comparatively compact area, but the modern city extends considerably beyond it. Residential neighbourhoods and transport connections spread north and south, meeting several different waterside settings. A broad view is therefore particularly useful. It shows that the centre provides orientation without containing every aspect of the city's character. Transitions towards surrounding districts and open land are equally important to understanding how Lünen's different parts relate and why they occupy such varied spaces.
Historic places among green spaces
Schloss Schwansbell introduces another historical reference southeast of the centre. Its setting can be read together with the Seepark and the routes between them. Older sites and younger recreational landscapes now contribute to a shared urban environment, despite their different origins. Northern neighbourhoods and the Cappenberger See extend the picture in the other direction. Paying attention to these connecting spaces adds depth to an exploration of Lünen. The city emerges with a compact centre and extensive landscape relationships, shaped jointly by river geography, industrial development and the later creation of new public spaces.
