About the product

The Prado and Retiro connect Madrid’s cultural institutions with an extensive designed landscape. Museum buildings and major urban routes occupy the western edge, while park paths, trees and open ground spread eastwards. The Palacio de Cristal introduces a delicate exhibition structure within the greenery, and Plaza de Cibeles provides a contrasting space shaped by city traffic. Moving between street, museum and garden reveals the area’s distinctive character. Different periods created places for looking, learning and recreation here. Their connecting routes bring architecture and landscape into one public setting, showing how closely cultural life can relate to the open spaces of a capital. In square beech, museum edge and park paths have equal room. The frame and black back plate give the fine cut lines a steady boundary.

Prado and Retiro, a landscape of art and knowledge

Around the Prado and Retiro, greenery is part of the city’s cultural infrastructure. Museums, gardens and formal streets developed in close relationship, providing spaces for knowledge, art and recreation. UNESCO recognition concerns this combined landscape, where buildings and public ground contribute together to the character of central Madrid.

Culture arranged within a landscape

The Paseo del Prado and Retiro form a cultural landscape developed over several periods within Madrid. Their UNESCO recognition concerns the relationship between designed nature, urban space and institutions devoted to art and knowledge. This perspective prevents the park from becoming merely a scenic background to famous buildings. Paths, trees, open areas and architecture all contribute to the significance of the place.

The Museo del Prado stands along the western side. Opened as a museum in 1819, it places art within a public setting of substantial streets and formal buildings. Nearby greenery changes the relationship between the institution and its surroundings. Leaving the museum leads into a sequence of different open spaces rather than immediately into one continuous commercial street environment.

From royal grounds to public garden

Retiro has royal origins and developed into a public park. Its extensive grounds contain several kinds of designed space. Broader routes establish clear connections, while smaller paths introduce different directions and opportunities to pause. Trees, water and open areas alternate within the same larger landscape. The park’s character therefore comes from variation rather than from an undifferentiated expanse of green.

Its closeness to the built city remains important throughout. At the edges, streets and park meet directly. A substantial change of environment is possible without leaving central Madrid. Retiro consequently belongs to the history of public recreation as well as to the growth of the capital. Its large area remains connected with neighbouring districts and with ordinary journeys through the city.

Glass, exhibition and the surrounding streets

The Palacio de Cristal was built in 1887 for an exhibition concerning the Philippines. Iron and glass distinguish the pavilion from the heavier museum and residential buildings outside the park. Its form makes the relationship between display and landscape particularly evident. The pavilion stands within the garden while allowing that setting to remain visible through much of its enclosure.

Plaza de Cibeles provides a contrasting urban space to the northwest. Major streets converge there within a formal civic setting. Moving between that junction, the Prado and quieter garden paths changes the experience repeatedly. This sequence explains the area’s coherence. Art is not confined to a museum interior, and landscape is not detached from the surrounding city. Both participate in a linked series of public places, each with a distinct physical form and a complementary role.
