Mönchengladbach.Abteiberg and Alter Markt
Round wooden city map made from natural oiled MDF.
About the product
Medieval church grounds and modern museum architecture meet on Mönchengladbach's Abteiberg. St Vitus Minster, Museum Abteiberg and Alter Markt form a compact arrangement of short streets, squares and hillside gardens. Wood gives the map a warm, restrained character. Close connections between church, art and the old centre bring different periods of the city's history into the same small area.

Architecture and the hillside at Abteiberg
On the Abteiberg, contrasting architectural worlds stand only a short distance apart. Museum, minster and market make this one of Mönchengladbach’s most concentrated urban settings. The hillside actively shapes their relationship, influencing the arrangement of buildings, the changes between spaces and the routes connecting the older centre with the museum grounds.
A museum assembled from different forms
Hans Hollein conceived the Abteiberg Museum as a complex of distinct parts. Built between 1977 and 1982, it responds to the sloping site through volumes of different shapes. The result is more varied than a single enclosed museum block. Individual elements form a larger composition that also engages with the surrounding city. This approach suits a place already marked by changes in elevation, density and historical significance. The architecture develops those differences into its own spatial language, giving modern museum design a specific relationship with an established urban hillside.
Gardens within the architectural composition
The sculpture garden extends the museum into an outdoor setting with several layers of design. Its upper terraces belong to the wider context of Hollein’s scheme, while the lower garden follows a different, more formal arrangement. The sculpture garden’s opening in 2002 developed the relationship between collection, building and surroundings further. These spaces have an active role in the composition. They negotiate changes in level, separate building volumes and establish a transition between the museum and neighbouring streets. The grounds are therefore essential to understanding the museum as a place within the city.
Close neighbours with different roles
St Vitus Minster stands west of the museum, with Alter Markt to the north. The distances between them are short, although each creates a different kind of space. A substantial church, a modern cultural building and an urban square occupy neighbouring positions in a tightly connected area. Short streets join them without removing their individual character. This explains why the Abteiberg’s cultural importance extends beyond the museum itself. The older centre supplies an existing framework, which the newer architecture enters, develops and occasionally reinterprets through its own distinctive arrangement of buildings and open ground.
Following the whole hillside
Across the Abteiberg, confined routes alternate with larger open spaces. The slope and varied buildings prevent one uniform square from dominating the entire area. Instead, a sequence of smaller relationships gives the district its shape. The proximity of the three principal places makes different forms of public space easy to compare: the church setting, the market and the museum garden each work differently. Their close association gives this part of Mönchengladbach its particular density. Earlier structures and later architecture remain in direct contact, joined through a hillside that is fundamental to the experience of the place.
