City guide

The different centres of Mönchengladbach

The distance between the Abteiberg and Rheydt is part of Mönchengladbach’s story. Its historic core alone cannot explain the wider city. Parks, sporting grounds and the moated castle to the east reveal a larger pattern, preserving the distinct roles of places that developed separately before becoming parts of one urban area.

Earlier towns within a shared city

Rheydt was an independent town for many years. The municipal reorganisation of 1975 brought it together with Mönchengladbach and Wickrath. That history remains important to the present urban layout: Rheydt retains its own centre south of the older Gladbach core. The ground between them is an active part of the city, occupied by roads, residential neighbourhoods and areas shaped by commercial uses. Mönchengladbach consequently has several reference points, each rooted in a different history but joined through an extensive network of streets and continuous settlement.

Culture on the Abteiberg

St Vitus Minster and the Abteiberg Museum stand close together on the historic hill. Hans Hollein’s museum, built between 1977 and 1982, added a modern cultural layer to this established centre. Within the wider urban landscape, the Abteiberg remains a concentrated focal point. Its fine-grained surroundings differ from the larger sites towards the city’s edges and from its other central districts. The proximity of church and museum shows how buildings from different periods can give the same place successive roles without removing its importance as a centre of urban life.

Parks and larger footprints

Bunter Garten extends through the built-up area north of the centre. It developed through several phases, including the German Rose Show of 1928. Borussia-Park provides a very different scale to the west. This substantial sporting site belongs to the same urban composition as the much smaller residential streets. Together, the two places demonstrate different uses of open ground. The garden creates a long green connection, while the stadium occupies a clearly defined site with extensive surroundings. Both contribute major spatial elements alongside the city’s historic and civic centres.

A castle in a greener setting

Rheydt Castle lies east of the more densely built neighbourhoods, within a comparatively open landscape. The Renaissance moated complex has a distinct layout and houses a municipal museum. Its relationship with the surrounding ground differs from that of the central Abteiberg. Water and open space play a larger part in defining the building’s setting. Seen alongside Bunter Garten, Borussia-Park and the two urban centres, the castle completes a broad picture of Mönchengladbach. Historic hill, former independent town and moated residence each establish a different kind of focal point within the shared city.
