Mülheim an der Ruhr.Ruhr valley, Broich and Saarn
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled beech – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Mülheim’s Ruhr valley links places with very different histories. Broich Castle near the centre, the Aquarius water tower in Styrum and Saarn Abbey establish a north–south sequence, complemented by the main station to the east. The city map’s wooden material gives this varied arrangement a quiet physical presence. Streets and riverside spaces bring the separate neighbourhoods into one connected urban view.

Mülheim: different histories connected by the Ruhr
The Ruhr provides a shared landscape for Mülheim’s distinct neighbourhoods. Broich Castle stands on the western bank close to the centre. Aquarius in northern Styrum records industrial water infrastructure, while Saarn Abbey introduces an older religious history farther south. The main station to the east adds another connection within the wider city.
A river valley with several centres
Mülheim occupies a valley in which built neighbourhoods and open ground share a continuous landscape. The Ruhr provides direction without making the districts uniform. Northern Styrum and southern Saarn have separate histories and recognisable local reference points. Between them, the central city brings streets, crossings and residential areas into the same arrangement. This distribution makes the valley useful for understanding the city as a whole. It connects places across considerable distances while allowing their different origins and functions to remain visible.
Broich beside the central river
Broich Castle stands near the city centre on the Ruhr’s western bank. Its history of fortification and territorial rule belongs to a much older chapter than the city’s industrial growth. The historical museum brings together objects and evidence concerning the castle and its former lordship. Location is an essential part of that story: the complex occupies the river corridor while remaining close to the urban area across the water. Castle, riverbank and surrounding streets therefore form a relationship between defence, settlement and movement.
Industrial water in Styrum
Aquarius occupies a former water tower in the north. Built in 1892/93 by August Thyssen to supply his iron rolling works, the tower connected industrial production with water infrastructure. Its responsibilities later extended to neighbouring settlements. The museum’s subject continues that connection between a technical building and an everyday resource. Within Mülheim’s geography, Styrum supplies a northern landmark with a different purpose from Broich. The two places reveal separate historical needs, both related to the development of the same valley city.
The older world of Saarn
Saarn Abbey introduces a religious and economic history farther south. Founded in 1214 as a Cistercian convent, the former abbey retains buildings from several centuries. Its museum addresses monastic life as well as the convent’s economic organisation. That combination helps explain why the site matters beyond a single architectural period. In the present city, the complex belongs to an established neighbourhood close to the wider river landscape. It provides a southern counterpart to the industrial infrastructure in Styrum without repeating its story.
Connections beyond the riverbank
The main station lies east of the Ruhr and adds rail movement to the portrait. Its position shows that Mülheim’s structure cannot be explained by the river alone. Roads and tracks connect the districts locally while linking the city with a wider region. Broich, Styrum and Saarn remain distinct within this network. Their surrounding streets and intervening built areas bring fortification, industry and religious settlement into one urban context. The city’s interest lies partly in the continued coexistence of these different historical and geographical layers.
