Munich.Kunstareal
Square wooden city map of Kunstareal made from oiled oak – two layers with a black back plate and frame.
About the product
Munich’s Kunstareal brings several major museums within a few streets of one another. This map covers the Glyptothek and Lenbachhaus alongside the Alte Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne and Museum Brandhorst. Squares and connecting streets establish the district’s layout around them. Oiled oak gives the square map a natural surface, while a black backing separates the cut layer from its ground. A frame completes the outline of this compact view of Munich’s museum neighbourhood.

Munich’s Kunstareal beyond the gallery walls
The Kunstareal brings ancient sculpture, European painting and modern design into close proximity. Its buildings offer another subject to explore alongside the collections. Between Königsplatz and the Pinakotheken, entrances, courtyards and open approaches reveal how separate museums contribute to the character of a living city district.
A museum addresses Königsplatz
The Glyptothek was built under King Ludwig I and opened in 1830. Leo von Klenze designed an Ionic temple frontage for its collection of ancient sculpture. The architecture announces the museum’s subject before a visitor enters, connecting the display of antiquities with a public ideal of art and education.
The space in front of the building is part of that statement. Unlike a façade inserted into an ordinary row of houses, the museum can be seen across an open approach. At the same time, the surrounding roads remain part of Munich’s daily life. This coexistence of cultural monument and working neighbourhood is a defining feature of the area.
Different collections, different forms
The Alte Pinakothek presents European painting from the Middle Ages to the Rococo. Its elongated building establishes a different presence from the more compact Glyptothek. Comparing them encourages attention to the spaces created for collections, rather than considering a museum simply as a container for individual masterpieces.
At the Pinakothek der Moderne, art, graphic works, architecture and design share a broader institutional setting. That combination reflects the diversity of the surrounding district. Several institutions stand within easy reach of one another, but each retains its own entrance, identity and emphasis. The walk between them can therefore become part of the cultural experience rather than an interval to hurry through.
Reading the spaces between museums
The Lenbachhaus lies west of the Pinakotheken, close to Königsplatz. Its position helps demonstrate how tightly the cultural destinations are gathered. Further east, Museum Brandhorst adds another independent museum building. Together they create a sequence, but not an uninterrupted frontage: roads and open spaces preserve the individual presence of each institution.
A rewarding way to explore is to vary the direction of attention. Look along a long façade, then across a forecourt, then towards a more enclosed space. Differences in approach and scale become apparent. They explain aspects of the district that a list of collections would leave out.
The Kunstareal works because its museums remain distinct while sharing a compact urban setting. Their proximity connects different fields of art, but the intervening streets keep the experience grounded in Munich itself. Moving between buildings is also a way of encountering the city’s history of making culture public.
