Neumünster.Textile town, parks and neighbourhoods
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled beech – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Neumünster stretches from its green northwestern edge through the railway district to Wittorf in the south. The Gerisch sculpture park introduces another cultural focus to the east. On this wooden city map, generous open spaces meet streets shaped by an industrial and textile past. These contrasting areas form a broader town portrait extending beyond the historic centre.

Neumünster: Textile town, parks and neighbourhoods
Transport connections helped Neumünster become an industrial town, with textile production playing a central role. Its present geography also includes substantial green spaces and distinct residential areas. The zoo, railway station, Gerisch sculpture park and Wittorf provide different reference points for understanding how this wider urban structure fits together.
Production and connections
Neumünster's textile industry grew from a combination of useful local conditions. Its position on important routes supported the movement of goods, while soft water suited cloth production. Workshops developed into larger businesses. Engineering grew alongside them, as local firms repaired textile machinery and built new equipment. The industrial town therefore depended on related activities rather than one isolated trade.
The decline of cloth and leather manufacturing later changed that economic base. The last cloth factory closed in 1991. Industrial history nevertheless remained embedded in the city's structure. Large plots, surviving buildings and transport corridors continued to shape the town after their original purposes had altered. These physical relationships help explain Neumünster more clearly than a simple list of former companies.
A railway town with residential extensions
The railway station stands north of the older centre. It gives the town an important point of contact with the wider region, while the railway land creates its own pattern within the built area. Streets approaching the station link neighbourhoods to that network. At the same time, rail corridors introduce edges and crossings into the urban fabric.
Wittorf provides a southern reference point. Including this district reveals the larger residential city beyond its best-known central spaces. The distance between Wittorf and the station contains changes in density and land use rather than a single uniform neighbourhood. Neumünster's everyday geography depends on those connections between districts. Its industrial origins and residential growth need to be understood together.
Two different green settings
The zoo marks the greener northwestern side of the town. Its surroundings contrast with the more heavily built transport areas. East of the station, the Gerisch sculpture park establishes another kind of open space, bringing contemporary art into a garden setting. These places are both green, but their purposes and relationships with the city differ.
Their distribution shows that open land is not confined to one outer boundary. Green spaces enter the wider settlement from different directions and interrupt the pattern of streets and buildings. They help explain the changing scale of Neumünster as much as its industrial plots do.
The zoo, station, sculpture park and Wittorf consequently offer four complementary perspectives. Together they describe a town of production, movement, housing and cultivated open space. The connections between them are essential to understanding a city that extends well beyond its compact historic centre.
