About the product

Residential streets, green corridors and newer civic spaces shape Norderstedt. The town hall, Garstedt station and city park establish different focal points within a connected urban area. Their relationship, together with the Fire Brigade Museum west of the centre, gives this wooden map its character. Older settlements, modern planning and substantial open spaces all contribute to the structure of the young city.

City guide

Norderstedt: A young city with several established centres

Norderstedt was formed from four municipalities in 1970. That relatively recent union helps explain why no single old centre dominates the whole urban area. The wider view connects the new civic middle with Garstedt, the museum district and city park, following the routes between inherited settlements and more recently planned public places.

Four settlements behind one name

Friedrichsgabe, Garstedt, Harksheide and Glashütte provide the starting point for understanding Norderstedt. Their union in 1970 created a common municipality without removing the structures of the earlier settlements. Several established points of reference remained, later supplemented by public institutions and transport links. This gives the city a different form from a town that grew gradually around one market square. Its history did not begin with the shared name. The modern city rests on several older foundations, and their relationships are still important to the way its urban area is organised.

Creating a shared civic middle

The town hall represents the development of a common civic focus within this existing pattern. The new centre belongs to a later planning phase and serves different purposes from the original settlement cores. Its connections with surrounding housing are therefore particularly important. Roads, paths and public institutions organise the wider area without bringing every district into one tightly packed form. Norderstedt's coherence comes from shared places and accessible connections. Understanding that network is more useful than looking for a continuous historic centre that the city never possessed in the conventional sense.

A southern focus at Garstedt

Garstedt station provides an important transport reference in the south. Its location shows that everyday movement is not directed solely towards the town hall. Public transport and surrounding activities create a focus of their own. Housing and other urban uses occupy the ground between Garstedt and the newer centre, forming a connected built-up area. The distance between these places gives a practical sense of the city's extent. It also reveals several kinds of centrality: administration, movement and services can occupy different locations while contributing to the functioning of one city.

Parkland and places of memory

The city park developed from land shaped by earlier uses and was reworked in connection with the 2011 state garden show. It provides a substantial open counterpart to the built neighbourhoods. West of the centre, the Fire Brigade Museum adds a cultural destination and a connection with historical experience. Together with residential districts, these places form a varied portrait. The repeated change between open ground, longer connecting streets and local centres is particularly revealing. It describes a young shared city whose identity continues to depend on several distinct and much older spatial foundations.
