About the product
Oberhausen's industrial and green landscapes meet between the Gasometer and Kaisergarten. This wooden city map brings the former gas holder's distinctive shape together with park paths and the line of the Rhine-Herne Canal. The landscape between Gasometer and Kaisergarten
Industrial history, parkland and contemporary bridge design meet around Oberhausen Castle. The Gasometer brings a technical scale to the area, while Kaisergarten introduces a landscaped setting. The canal crossing adds a further connection, making this short stretch a distinctive urban place where several periods of the city’s development sit close together.
A storage structure with immense dimensions
The Gasometer originated within an industrial energy system. It stored gas and balanced differences between production and consumption. That task explains the building’s large, clearly defined form. In the cityscape, its dimensions contrast sharply with smaller structures and more closely divided streets. The Gasometer is therefore a distinctive place before its later uses are considered. Its cultural conversion works with the spatial character already present in the building. A technically determined interior became an exhibition setting while retaining the scale and identity associated with its industrial purpose.
A different historical setting to the west
Oberhausen Castle stands west of the Gasometer within a greener environment. Here, building and open ground form a different relationship. Paths and planted spaces divide the castle surroundings more finely than the area around the immense gas holder. Kaisergarten extends this landscaped setting. The closeness of the two places allows different phases of Oberhausen’s development to be considered together. An older castle complex and a major industrial structure occupy the same part of the city, yet their distinct origins remain clear rather than being absorbed into one uniform architectural landscape.
Canal infrastructure and a footbridge
The Rhine–Herne Canal follows the northern edge of the castle and park area. It belongs to the larger transport infrastructure that helped shape the region. Slinky springs to fame crosses this waterway as a particularly distinctive pedestrian bridge. It creates a practical link and acts as an independent element of design. Its location connects the park with the opposite bank. Several scales meet directly at this point: a regional waterway, a public landscape and a crossing designed for people on foot. Their relationship adds a contemporary layer to the historical setting.
Culture through close association
The short distances between Gasometer, castle and bridge give this area its particular character. Each place has a different purpose, while paths and open spaces draw them together. The former gas holder recalls industrial processes, the castle an earlier historical setting, and the bridge a more recent approach to public space. Their cultural value therefore extends beyond the individual buildings. It also lies in their neighbourhood relationship, where different stages of Oberhausen’s development can be understood within a compact area, connected by ground that remains open between these substantial and contrasting landmarks.
