Oldenburg.Hunte, palace and green districts
Round wooden city map made from oiled oak – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Oldenburg’s former residence sits within a city linked by the Hunte, gardens and established neighbourhoods. Eversten Holz and the Botanical Garden balance the northern waters of Flötenteich, extending the view beyond the palace district. Presented in wood, these varied spaces form a composed urban portrait. The pattern of streets connects courtly history, scientific greenery and the surrounding residential city.

Oldenburg’s palace, gardens and wider neighbourhoods
Oldenburg’s historic residence belongs to a city with several distinctive green areas. Schlossgarten and Eversten Holz lie southwest of the centre, with the university’s Botanical Garden farther west. Flötenteich introduces a northern water landscape. Together these places connect the old centre with a broader pattern of streets, housing and public greenery.
A residence within the city
Oldenburg Palace recalls the town’s role as a residence for counts, dukes and grand dukes. Its position near the Hunte places that history close to the southern edge of the central area. Yet the palace is only one part of the urban arrangement. Streets continue into established residential districts, while gardens provide different kinds of transition. Looking outward from the residence helps explain how a historic centre relates to a larger city, with green spaces distributed in several directions.
A designed landscape beside the palace
Schlossgarten was laid out under Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig in the tradition of the English landscape garden. Instead of relying on strict geometric axes, this approach composed planting, paths and open ground as a landscape. The garden therefore records a particular chapter in courtly culture as well as serving as public greenery today. Its proximity to the palace makes their historical relationship clear. The two places nevertheless retain different spatial roles: one is a built residence, the other an extended planted environment.
Eversten Holz and older landscapes
Eversten Holz introduces another history southwest of the centre. Its woodland origins precede the city’s modern expansion, and landscaping activity is associated with Count Anton Günther. The wooded area differs from the palace garden even though both belong to Oldenburg’s green heritage. Their positions show how older landscapes became part of an urban setting. The boundaries between tree cover and residential streets are important to this relationship. They demonstrate that the city’s greenery developed through several processes rather than one comprehensive park plan.
Plants, knowledge and public space
The Botanical Garden west of the historic centre belongs to the University of Oldenburg. Its scientific role adds a different dimension to the city’s network of green places. Here, public encounters with plants sit alongside academic responsibilities. The garden’s separate location also matters: residential streets intervene between it, Eversten Holz and Schlossgarten. These are distinct places with different purposes, connected by the wider city. Their distribution gives Oldenburg several centres of greenery without making those centres interchangeable in history or use.
Extending the view northward
Flötenteich brings the northern neighbourhoods into the portrait. Away from the immediate palace district, the lake offers another kind of open space and reveals the city’s residential reach. It balances the gardens and woodland farther southwest. The Hunte, the residence, university botany and northern water together create a varied urban landscape. Ordinary streets and built areas connect these reference points. Oldenburg’s character emerges from that arrangement, where its historic identity remains visible within a city considerably larger than its former courtly centre.
