About the product

Ratingen opens out between the Volkardey lakes and the landscape to the east. Its market square, Cromford textile factory and Haus zum Haus connect civic history, early industry and older estates. Their different settings give this wooden map a varied rhythm. Central streets lead into residential neighbourhoods and green spaces, while railway connections add another line through the eastern urban area.

City guide

Ratingen: Market streets, early industry and lakes

Ratingen's history extends well beyond its market square. Early textile manufacturing, historic estates and extensive recreational areas occupy nearby but distinct settings. A wider view from Volkardey towards the eastern landscape reveals how these places relate, making the transitions between them an important part of the city's identity today.

An early industrial landscape

The Cromford textile factory represents an important chapter in early industrialisation. Johann Gottfried Brügelmann's cotton-spinning enterprise introduced a new scale and organisation of production. Its position north of the centre shows that manufacturing occupied a setting of its own. Nearby green spaces and historic sites add further layers. The interest lies in their proximity: market town, factory landscape and open ground remain distinguishable, yet closely connected. Considering them together gives the northern urban area a historical depth that would be missed by viewing the factory simply as a detached museum destination.

A compact civic centre

Ratingen's market square provides a clear starting point. St. Peter and Paul and the surrounding streets give the older centre a recognisable historical form. Spaces here can be understood at the scale of individual blocks and short connections. Farther out, larger roads and younger neighbourhoods introduce different dimensions. The market remains a central reference without concentrating every modern urban function around it. This relationship between a compact civic core and a broader developed area is essential to understanding Ratingen. The city becomes more varied as the view moves beyond its familiar central streets.

The western lakes

Volkardey introduces a substantial recreational landscape west of the centre. Water and paths occupy larger areas here than the individual building plots of the old town. Nearby neighbourhoods consequently have a different kind of edge from those beside the eastern transport routes. Ratingen Ost marks the railway connection on that side, while western spaces look towards lakes and leisure. Moving between these settings reveals repeated changes of scale. Ratingen's wider character comes from the close relationship between market streets, industrial heritage, residential areas and open water, all forming parts of a connected urban landscape rather than separate excursions.

Estates within an expanding town

Haus zum Haus belongs to a different strand of local history. Beyond the tightest market streets, it retains a setting distinct from the civic centre. Burg Gräfgenstein provides another historic reference farther east. Such places show that several established sites existed before the modern town spread across a larger area. Their present relationships with surrounding development can therefore be read as the result of later growth. Comparing them with more recent green connections around Cromford reveals how inherited places and new public spaces continue to shape the city together.
