Reutlingen.City centre, Betzingen and Achalm
Round wooden city map made from oiled oak – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
From Achalm to Betzingen, Reutlingen reveals much more than its historic centre. This wooden city map connects dense central streets with the Pomologie gardens and western residential neighbourhoods. Reutlingen through its hill and gardens
Reutlingen has a historic centre, yet its shape also depends on neighbouring districts and the prominence of Achalm. Betzingen lies to the west, with the Pomologie south of the central streets. Together, these places connect the old town with garden history, residential life and a strong reference in the surrounding terrain.
A hill facing the city
Achalm rises east of central Reutlingen and gives the city a particularly distinct point of reference. The hill is more than a destination for a broad view: its position also helps explain how the developed area spreads. Streets follow one another closely in the centre, while the urban setting opens toward the rising ground. Achalm provides a visible height against this transition. From below it offers orientation on the horizon; from above, the relationship between neighbourhoods becomes clearer. This change of perspective is part of Reutlingen's character and adds another dimension to its familiar historic streets and buildings.
Garden history within everyday reach
The Pomologie lies south of the city centre, with a name recalling the study and cultivation of fruit. Today it forms a public garden within the urban setting. Paths, trees and open spaces replace the continuous sequence of façades found in the historic streets. This makes the garden more than a convenient interval between other destinations. It represents a different way of using the city, bringing plant knowledge, recreation and designed landscape together. Its proximity to the centre allows people to change their surroundings without leaving the connected geography of daily life. Garden and town remain close enough to influence the same afternoon.
Looking west toward Betzingen
Betzingen occupies the western side of Reutlingen's central urban area and has its own history of development. It became part of the city and is now closely joined to it, but still deserves to be understood as a distinct reference. Its position shows why Reutlingen cannot be reduced to the visitor's familiar old town. The intervening neighbourhoods are inhabited and used spaces rather than an empty distance. Their streets connect local communities with central services. These transitions help explain how a historic town and surrounding settlements came to form a continuous modern urban area, while retaining differences in atmosphere and local identity.
Arrivals and changing perspectives
The main railway station north of the centre introduces another scale. It is an arrival point from which both central streets and the wider neighbourhoods become accessible. Together with Pomologie, Betzingen and Achalm, it reveals a city arranged around different directions: the gardens provide a southern reference, Betzingen a western one, and the hill stands to the east. This distribution prevents every mental route from shrinking to a few old-town lanes. Exploring Reutlingen can mean moving between closely built streets, open garden paths and an elevated outlook. The result is a deeper understanding of the city that keeps its historic centre in view while giving its other settings room.
