About the product

Rostock follows the Warnow while spreading far into western neighbourhoods. St Peter's Church, the zoo and the Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum connect its historic centre, newer districts and maritime waterfront. Broad stretches of water meet dense streets and larger green spaces on this wooden map. The material's warmth complements a city whose neighbourhoods relate to the river in different ways.

City guide

Rostock’s changing relationship with the Warnow

The Warnow forms an urban axis with very different settings along its banks. Rostock’s historic core, transport areas and maritime sites relate to the water in changing ways. Including the western residential and green districts reveals a larger city whose form extends well beyond the closely built streets of the old town.

A historic centre beside the water

St Peter’s Church stands at the eastern edge of the old town and is one of Rostock’s defining historic churches. Its position helps identify the earlier core within the present urban area. Dense streets meet the nearby Warnow in this part of the city. The river was fundamental to the trading town and its connections with the wider world. The historic centre consequently cannot be understood separately from the water. Its location and boundaries reflect the relationship between settlement, riverbank and the possibilities offered by access to maritime routes.

A wider maritime landscape

North of the historic centre, the river space becomes broader. The Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum provides a reference point for the city’s maritime industrial history. Its distance from the older core demonstrates how far Rostock’s relationship with water extended. Trade, shipping and industrial activity produced different spatial forms. A riverbank with larger sites has a different character from the densely built old town. The Warnow joins these areas geographically even where their buildings and purposes vary considerably. Those differences make the river a changing urban axis rather than a uniform waterfront.

Landward routes and western districts

The main railway station lies south of the historic centre. Its transport connections add a landward network to the older orientation towards the river. Farther west, the zoo occupies a greener setting. Residential neighbourhoods and substantial roads fill the connections between station, old town and zoo, creating a continuous urban area. This western part is essential to the broader picture. It presents Rostock as an extensive place of residence and work, with an everyday structure reaching beyond the best-known historic buildings and the individual landmarks associated with maritime life.

Different densities within one city

St Peter’s Church, the station, zoo and maritime museum bring several scales into the same view. Compact older streets alternate with larger grounds and open spaces. The Warnow provides a strong reference throughout, but its banks are used and built in different ways. Some sections are closely related to dense neighbourhoods, while others are accompanied by much broader areas. Rostock’s character emerges from these transitions. The historic core remains legible as later districts and maritime development extend the city in other directions, creating a wide and varied urban landscape along the river.
