About the product

The Alter Strom runs through Warnemünde's historic centre towards the Baltic Sea. Short streets, waterfront paths and close rows of houses lie between the church and lighthouse before the settlement opens onto the beach. Wood lends this maritime map a calm warmth. Sheltered water, a compact centre and the open coast meet within a small part of northern Rostock.

Warnemünde from the Alter Strom to the Baltic

Warnemünde has a distinct water-shaped identity within Rostock. The Alter Strom runs between closely related banks before the setting opens towards the coast. Church and lighthouse explain different parts of that transition: one belongs to the established settlement, while the other is associated with navigation and the open sea.

An older settlement at the coast

Warnemünde was mentioned as early as 1195. Its historic area retains a small scale that differs from the larger urban settings farther south in Rostock. Short streets and closely spaced buildings define much of the older settlement. Their relationship with water is fundamental to the plan. The town developed where settlement, shipping and the open coast meet directly. Maritime connections therefore extend beyond individual attractions. They help explain the broader arrangement of historic Warnemünde, including the direction of routes and the close association between buildings, enclosed water and the sea.

The Alter Strom within the town

The Alter Strom provides a particularly clear axis through the settlement. Its banks run lengthwise through the built-up area, creating an open space different from a conventional square. Buildings and paths remain close to the water, giving this stretch a more enclosed character than the open coast. The relationship between its two banks is one of Warnemünde’s defining spatial features. Smaller connections meet the longer watercourse, and the direction of many routes can be understood through their proximity to it. The water belongs to the interior of the settlement as well as its maritime setting.

Church and lighthouse in different settings

The church stands within the older built-up centre, while the lighthouse lies farther north near the beach. Their positions make their different roles clear. The church gathers an internal urban space, whereas the lighthouse relates to the coast and navigation. Although the distance between them is relatively short, their surroundings change noticeably. More closely enclosed streets give way to broader spaces and a different relationship between buildings and water. The lighthouse is therefore both a recognisable structure and a reference point for the transition from the settlement to the sea.

An opening towards the Baltic

At the northern end of the historic area, the coastal landscape becomes more prominent. Beach, open water and harbour entrance introduce dimensions quite different from the rows of buildings beside the Alter Strom. This change is central to Warnemünde’s form. It has both an internal water axis and an outward-facing seafront. They stand close together but organise the surrounding space differently. Their combination explains how a compact historic settlement can maintain such a strong connection with the open Baltic, giving Warnemünde a distinct maritime character within the much larger city of Rostock.
