Rothenburg ob der Tauber.Town walls and Tauber valley
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled maple – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Rothenburg's town wall draws a distinct outline above the Tauber valley. The map extends from the Castle Garden and Spital Gate to newer neighbourhoods and Detwang below. A close network of old lanes meets open countryside and roads beyond the fortifications. The warmth of wood suits this relationship between the enclosed historic town and its gently unfolding surroundings.

Rothenburg above the Tauber valley
Rothenburg’s setting becomes clear through the relationship between its fortified hilltop and the lower valley. The famous old town is one layer of a larger place. Detwang, the railway station area and the open ground around the Castle Garden reveal a landscape in which boundaries and connections are equally significant.
An earlier settlement below the town
The town’s history reaches back to Detwang, where a parish was established around 970, before the later town developed on the higher ground. This chronology gives the relationship between the two settlements particular interest. Detwang occupies the valley northwest of the fortified centre. The earlier settlement and the town above it hold different positions within the same landscape. Considering both places broadens the story beyond Rothenburg’s familiar walls. Its development belongs to a wider setting of settlement, routes and terrain, rather than beginning and ending within the celebrated old town.
Walls around a changing settlement
The fortifications surround the old town for approximately four kilometres. Their outline contains an urban area that grew over time, rather than a perfectly regular planned shape. Spital Gate belongs to the southern extension of this fortified settlement. Gateways, walls and streets form a closely connected arrangement: routes gather within the boundary and continue outside it at different scales. The walls therefore have two simultaneous roles. They are important historic structures, and they remain a particularly legible line in the present-day town plan, distinguishing the enclosed centre from the areas beyond it.
The western edge and its landscape
The balance between buildings and open ground changes around the Castle Garden. It occupies a projecting area above the Tauber valley, bringing the landscape directly against the historic centre. This is a different kind of edge from the railway station district to the east. Paths, gardens and the valley shape the outward relationship of the town. Rothenburg’s elevated position consequently has a direct effect on its urban form. It helps explain why the western side meets its surroundings differently from the later extensions on the more accessible eastern side of the settlement.
Preservation and continued growth
Rothenburg’s historic appearance also reflects deliberate preservation and reconstruction. Substantial areas were rebuilt after destruction during the Second World War. Donor stones along the walls record support for their upkeep. Meanwhile, the station area east of the old town demonstrates continued development beyond the fortifications. These layers belong together: an earlier valley settlement, the enclosed town, reconstructed historic fabric and later growth. The apparent unity of Rothenburg should therefore be understood as something maintained through major disruptions, rather than as evidence that the town has passed unchanged through every period of its history.
