About the product

Three distinct settings face one another across the central Neva. The Winter Palace forms a long ceremonial riverfront, the Peter and Paul Fortress occupies Hare Island, and the Strelka projects from Vasilyevsky Island towards the water. The Old Stock Exchange and Rostral Columns give this third shore a commercial and maritime identity. Bridges connect the different banks while preserving their separate shapes. Distance is essential to the effect: broad water allows the architecture to be understood as one cityscape. Residence, fortress and trading place express different parts of the capital’s history, all addressing the same open surface. The river itself becomes the centre of the ensemble. The two-layer oak map leaves space for the broad river between cut shorelines. Palace, fortress and Strelka remain three points of reference within one crop.

The Neva between palace, fortress and Strelka

The central Neva brings several important façades into a shared setting. Winter Palace, fortress and Strelka form an uneven triangle, with each shore carrying a different history and architectural character. The water between them supplies the distance that allows these separate places to read as one expansive urban landscape.

A palace addressing the southern bank

The Winter Palace presents a long, richly articulated façade towards the Neva. Its scale becomes particularly apparent across the river. From the opposite side, individual architectural elements belong to a continuous front, while a closer approach brings attention to details. The palace therefore operates both as a single building and as a defining stretch of the city’s embankment.

Its role as an imperial residence explains the representational ambition. Architecture was used to express political and social standing. The river strengthens that effect by maintaining distance and allowing a broad view. Water acts almost as an extensive forecourt, although it also carries movement, navigation and the practical need for connections between different sides of the city.

A fortified island opposite

The Peter and Paul Fortress was founded in 1703. Its separate island position and bastioned form distinguish it from the palace frontage. Enclosure and defensive geometry shape the ground plan. The fortress belongs to the city’s earliest history, while the later imperial capital developed additional forms of urban order around it.

Seen across the water, Hare Island remains a distinct physical body. Its edge does not follow the same logic as a long row of civic buildings. That contrast is fundamental to the Neva’s character here. A military site and a residence face one another, each asserting its presence through different forms and through the architectural requirements of a different original purpose.

The commercial identity of the Strelka

The eastern tip of Vasilyevsky Island holds the Strelka and the Old Stock Exchange. The classical building and Rostral Columns connect this setting with commerce and maritime identity. The island tip projects into the river landscape, creating a third prominent position within the ensemble and mediating between different branches of water.

Palace Bridge establishes a direct connection with the southern bank. Opened in 1916, the bascule bridge belongs both to the transport network and to the distinctive appearance of this stretch of the Neva. It demonstrates that the broad water must be crossed while remaining a substantial space in its own right. Palace, fortress and exchange consequently form more than a sequence of landmarks. Their meaning emerges through opposing shores, open views and the crossings that connect physically separate places without removing the river between them.
