About the product

Central Saint Petersburg combines extensive water spaces with deliberately arranged streets. Vasilyevsky Island presents a regular grid to the west, while Nevsky Prospekt crosses the dense city south of the Neva towards the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The fortress and Winter Palace occupy prominent riverside positions within this much larger setting. Islands, continuous embankment fronts and long urban routes each contribute a different kind of order. Water creates distance, bridges restore connections, and buildings respond through formal façades or repeated blocks. The resulting cityscape reveals a planned capital as a sequence of related public spaces, extending well beyond its most familiar palace views. Cut in black lacquered MDF, the Classic map concentrates on river branches, islands and long streets. The rectangular surface keeps this broad city crop composed.

City guide

Saint Petersburg’s island grid and Nevsky axis

Saint Petersburg’s centre follows two interacting patterns: the islands and channels of the Neva, and a planned network of streets. Between Vasilyevsky Island and the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, regular neighbourhoods, broad crossings and Nevsky Prospekt give different parts of the city a clear relationship to one another.

Building a capital among islands

Founded in 1703, Saint Petersburg developed as a deliberately planned imperial capital. Its position on the Neva imposed particular conditions. Water and islands were not minor obstacles to an otherwise ordinary street plan. They helped determine where buildings could stand and how districts could connect. Broad river spaces consequently became as important to the centre’s organisation as streets and squares.

The Peter and Paul Fortress and Winter Palace are among the prominent places arranged around that water. Their effect depends partly on the distance between embankments. Major buildings can be seen in relation to one another across substantial open surfaces, rather than only within a narrow street view. This landscape scale distinguishes the central Neva from a smaller urban canal.

Vasilyevsky Island has a particularly legible network of streets. Its numbered lines recall plans in which canals played an important role; the names now identify sides of streets within the regular arrangement. Broader prospects and crossing routes divide the island into recognisable sections. Their geometry sits beside water edges that follow a less regular shape.

The island shows how planning could organise an extensive inhabited area, not merely provide settings for separate monuments. Behind the celebrated riverfronts lie residential and working districts with everyday routes of their own. The grid makes those neighbourhoods understandable as part of an island city. It adds a practical urban dimension to the more ceremonial image associated with the Neva.

A long route through the southern centre

Nevsky Prospekt runs through the built city south of the river. Its succession of frontages, junctions and public buildings creates a different kind of continuity from the open water. Urban significance is concentrated along a street where movement and commerce meet. The avenue gives several parts of the centre a common direction, while the surrounding blocks maintain a denser scale of city life.

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra provides a substantial religious complex at the eastern end, close to the Neva. Its relationship with the avenue gives this side of the city a clear point of reference. Across the centre, island grid, broad embankments, formal buildings and a long commercial street therefore operate together. Their proximity reveals variety within a capital whose deliberate planning remains especially visible in the arrangement of its central districts.
