São Paulo.Historic centre and southern cultural sites
Square wooden city map made from oiled walnut – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
São Paulo’s central landscape connects the cathedral and northern museum areas with Paulista Avenue and Ibirapuera Park to the south. The Pinacoteca and MASP give art and architecture different urban settings. Wood provides a natural material foundation for dense streets and substantial open grounds. The map reveals a broad relationship between the historic centre, cultural institutions, residential neighbourhoods and public greenery.

São Paulo’s cultural institutions from the centre to Ibirapuera
Central São Paulo has several cultural reference points. Sé Cathedral anchors the older centre, while Pina Luz introduces a northern museum setting. MASP stands on Avenida Paulista, and Ibirapuera opens the southern city into a large park landscape. Densely developed neighbourhoods connect these different institutions and public grounds within the wider urban fabric.
A cathedral in the historic centre
The present Sé Cathedral was inaugurated in 1954 for São Paulo’s four-hundredth anniversary. Its Neo-Gothic character follows the design of Maximilian Hehl. Earlier churches at the site connect the cathedral with a longer history of the centre. Its relationship with the public square and surrounding streets also matters to the city portrait. A substantial church stands within an intensely developed urban setting. The location gives the historic centre a clear reference, while the wider city has expanded far beyond that earlier focus. Several other cultural areas have consequently acquired distinct positions within the larger urban landscape.
An educational building becomes an art museum
Pina Luz, the Pinacoteca’s first home, lies north of the cathedral. Designed in the late nineteenth century by Ramos de Azevedo’s office, the building previously accommodated the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios. Extensive work in the late 1990s to Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s design adapted it to museum functions. Its history therefore connects education, inherited architecture and subsequent public engagement with art. The location establishes a northern cultural reference in the wider portrait. That role differs from the cathedral’s religious purpose as well as from the more open landscape settings farther south, introducing another institution and another architectural period into the city.
Modern museum architecture on Paulista Avenue
MASP was founded as a museum in 1947. Its original Avenida Paulista building dates from 1968 and was designed by Lina Bo Bardi. The institution introduces an architectural history different from that of Pina Luz. Its surrounding landscape is also distinct, organised around a major avenue and densely developed adjoining neighbourhoods. In the city overview, Paulista connects the art museum with the larger network of streets and residential areas. Culture consequently occupies several city locations, with different physical forms and separate relationships to neighbouring everyday uses. Those connections give each institution a setting within the wider urban fabric.
Ibirapuera as a shared green landscape
Ibirapuera was created in 1954 as part of celebrations for São Paulo’s four-hundredth anniversary. An earlier plant nursery within the grounds contributed to the area’s green development. The park was given social and recreational purposes within a growing metropolis. Open spaces and tree-rich areas contrast strongly with the dense central neighbourhoods. Connecting streets nevertheless link the park, Paulista, cathedral and Pinacoteca within one urban relationship. They bring distinct cultural and landscape references together rather than leaving them as separate destinations. São Paulo therefore emerges through several scales: institutional buildings, extensive residential and commercial districts, and a substantial public green space within the connected central city.
