Siegen.Castle town and northern university districts
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled oak – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Two castles and northern university districts give Siegen a clearly layered urban shape. This wooden map connects the Upper and Lower Castles with the Hölderlinstraße campus and Fischbacherberg. Residential streets and changing elevations occupy the intervals between them. The composition makes these relationships calmly readable, showing a city whose historical places and present-day life remain closely connected with its terrain.

Siegen through castle history and university life
Elevation forms part of Siegen's history. The Upper Castle occupies a commanding site, while the Lower Castle stands closer to central routes. University life uses historical and northern urban settings alike. Together with Fischbacherberg, these places reveal a city where terrain, architecture and daily life remain closely connected across different heights.
A historical address above the city
The Upper Castle developed from a medieval hilltop stronghold. Its location alone shows why Siegen's history cannot be told separately from the terrain. Above the central urban area, the complex underwent different building changes over time. Today's museum setting consequently joins a long historical development to an especially understandable location. Viewed through the city around it, the significance lies in more than old walls. The relationship with the development below matters equally. The castle provides an upper address for Siegen and makes the layered arrangement of routes, buildings and outlooks readily apparent to anyone considering how the inhabited city meets its surrounding heights.
Historical architecture in present use
The Lower Castle stands west of and below the Upper Castle. Built as a three-winged residence, it is now used by the university. Historical architecture meets the routines of contemporary education directly here. A place that once held a different form of public significance continues within a living city. Routes toward the buildings are also routes through central neighbourhoods. This use distinguishes the Lower Castle from a monument considered only from outside. Between the two castle settings, a historical relationship continues through present-day activities. Different elevations within one city acquire connections that are both inherited and actively used, rather than simply preserved as separate historical scenes.
University life across different districts
The Hölderlinstraße campus lies considerably north of the castles. Its position shows that Siegen's university life is not concentrated entirely within the historical centre. This distribution creates movement between different parts of the city. Central routes connect with northern residential and university surroundings, revealing the wider geography of contemporary Siegen. The distance is useful when considering the city: old and current institutions occupy different sections of the same inhabited landscape. The university becomes a spatial link between inherited places and subsequent development. It connects parts of a city in which changing terrain continues to influence the relationship between neighbourhoods and the routes used to reach them.
A western reference at Fischbacherberg
Fischbacherberg provides another elevated reference west of the castle settings. Its location adds a different direction to the north-south relationship between centre and campus. Siegen cannot consequently be understood through just one urban axis. Residential streets and everyday routes occupy the intervals between heights, responding to different positions within the terrain. Exploring the city brings these changes into experience with each transition between neighbourhoods. Castles, campus and the western hill together reveal a geography of history, knowledge and inhabited topography. The individual places remain distinct, but their deeper relationship comes from the land and from the routes that make them parts of a connected city.
