Stockholm.Islands and waterways
Rectangular wooden city map made from oiled maple – two layers with a black back plate.
About the product
Islands, bridges and waterways give Stockholm its distinctive outline. Between the Royal Palace, City Hall, Södermalm and Djurgården, narrow historic streets give way to larger neighbourhoods and open parkland. This map brings the interplay of land and water into wood. Its natural character complements the green island spaces and draws the city's varied districts into a calm composition.

Stockholm’s inner city of islands and waterfronts
Water forms more than an outer edge in Stockholm. It lies between central districts and determines the connections joining them. Palace, City Hall, station and Skansen occupy different island and waterfront settings. Together, they reveal a city whose continuity depends on crossings and whose variety comes from the distinct forms of its land areas.
A historic centre within the waterways
The Royal Palace stands within the old town area, where closer streets differ from many of the city’s later districts. Its position within the surrounding water is essential to this older core. Short connections lead towards neighbouring areas, while the shorelines create clear spatial boundaries. The old town is consequently compact and central at the same time. Its importance rests on historic buildings and on its location between other parts of the inner city. The palace provides a principal reference point within this closely connected network of land, water and crossings.
Larger districts to the west and south
Kungsholmen lies west of the historic core, with Södermalm to the south. Both contain substantial urban areas with their own internal organisation. Their waterfronts face neighbouring islands and central water spaces, while streets inland create different connections. City Hall occupies a particularly prominent position on the southeastern side of Kungsholmen. Its proximity to the water is fundamental to its setting. These districts are therefore distinct parts of Stockholm, each with a different role determined by the shape of its land, its buildings and the position of its principal landmarks.
Transport and a greener cultural setting
Stockholm Central stands north of the older palace district and gathers important transport connections. The station adds the structure of the railway to a city already organised through bridges and waterfronts. Skansen lies farther east on Djurgården within a greener landscape. Here, cultural uses occupy a setting with much more open ground. The distance between station and eastern parkland reveals the distribution of different activities within the inner city. Dense transport and commercial areas, historic streets and landscaped grounds remain closely related through roads and water crossings despite their contrasting scales.
Water connecting distinct places
Stockholm’s form becomes especially clear through the alternation of built land and open water. The waterways separate individual areas while giving them a shared spatial orientation. Bridges concentrate connections, making crossings important points in the city plan. The broad setting between Kungsholmen, Södermalm and Djurgården reveals this structure at several scales. Palace and City Hall establish individual landmarks, while the larger islands contain independent neighbourhoods. Their interaction explains an urban centre made from several distinct land and waterfront areas, held together by the routes and crossings that continue between them.
